How much is rent in New Jersey?

My best friend moved to New Jersey seven months ago. She said she REALLY wants me to come live up here and just because she moved doesn’t mean we can’t still be roommates. It will still happen. She said she’s planning to get her own place next year but the thing is, I can’t afford to move out and I want to finish school first. She said just transfer and I’m the ONLY person she trust and only me because the others screwed her over. I’m not even prepared or anything. I would have to get used to the cold and I really don’t wanna live there. It would be fun to be roommates but I don’t know what to think. Don’t think I’m gonna be able to have the money by next year! I need to help my dad with bills and stuff.

You should do what's best for you and it seems like staying where you are is best. Your friend might be lonely that's why she really wants you to come down. Sure you can have an open mind go there with no plan. Then what happens if your not able to find a job or a low income place. I remember my friend was trying to convince me to go to school because you can meet more friends and there's financial aid, etc. I already graduated from community College 3 times and was working while taking care of my child. So I really had no time for school. Then I asked do you have any scholarships. She said no. So basically she is recommending me to go to school then I'll get into debt not making as much or just as much then I already was. To me that's not worth it. I think sometimes friends think of their own benefit without realizing what your situation is. Like I said do what's best for you.
No state is more expensive to live in than New Jersey

Rent is absurb, if you can find good places

Transportation, prices, taxes and limited employment make NJ a bad destination.

People have been leaving Jersey in mass numbers for 30 years

@thedarkside @questionweaver This is true I am one of the ones who moved out but I sure do miss the Italian food 🍕
@Solana ... absolutely ... but the state is just driving people away

I miss strombolis
@Solana A good thing about Italian food is that quality preparations of it can be fond in most places. i moved from Boston (lived near the North End, the paisan enclave) to the paciffic Northwest and still find great Italian food.

I heard it’s very expensive over there but I just have a open mind. Also do what makes you happy and don’t do it just to make her happy because you’re in it being disappointed her if you lie to her and you say you wanna move that we really don’t. Be HONEST.
Low income rentals are a waiting list item, to residents ... generally 2 years

Am working with a builder on economics for 180 townhome apartments ... these will rent around $2000 a month (2 and 3 bedrooms)

The builder has to build by law, approximately 36 below market apartments, which drives up the rental on the others.

Only people who have to live there ... actually live there

@questionWeaver I may have to reconsider if I wanted to move over there. If I wanted to move up there how much money will I have to say to move? Be honest.
@ElizabethBabe1994 moving is relatively cheap ... maybe a $1000

The closer to New York you move to, everything gets more and more expensive

Small apartments in North Jersey, close to transportation, can easily go $3,000+ a month

New Jersey has 45,000 kids grow up and need housing every year ... yet they only build 20,000 units

@questionWeaver damn I wouldn’t move there if I was her

I guess it really depends. Look for low income apartments or houses. I wouldn’t know because I don’t live in that area but yeah. Don’t give up so quickly just look for low income apartments or houses. Be a lot better if you had a roommate and you split the rent. My cousin and I just moved in with each other last month and we split the rent it’s it’s just fine. Just remember to pay the bills and get furniture and all that kind of stuff. Save up a lot of money.

Depends where your moving certain towns are more expensive than others. The towns with a big downtown like Montclair Morristown Hoboken are all at least 2000+ one bedroom but you might be able to find better. The more west you go or south basically further away from NYC tends to be more affordable. Would be easier to know if she gave you a city then you can look it up.

Yeah rent is more on the expensive side here unfortunately

@ElizabethBabe1994 New Jersey is my home and I love it but I could never recommend anyone come live here
It’s too expensive for what you get
ElizabethBabe1994 · 26-30, F
@JRVanguard Yeah. Even the low income apartments are too expensive? Been trying to tell my friend but she won’t listen.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@ElizabethBabe1994 It’s not even that nice here
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
Well the good thing about having a roommate is you two can split the rent and other expenses. I understand your dilemma though.
ElizabethBabe1994 · 26-30, F
@SubstantialKick yeah that’s true. Depends how much the rent is. She’s having a feeling that she thinks I’m making excuses not to move out and come live in New Jersey. I admire her for not giving up always open to options and have an open mind. She doesn’t give up easy. She said I’m the only one out of our close friends that she trust.
PetiteJulie01 · 22-25, F
@SubstantialKick they can just look for low income places.
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@PetiteJulie01 Like Section 8? Well the problem with that would be finding a safe neighborhood. Much low income housing is located in places where you would not to be out after a certain time of day, especially in New Jersey.
