The best vacation was a two-week trip to the Canadian Maritimes with my family. We celebrated one of my children's birthdays in St. Stephen, New Brunswick and they got to tour the candy factory there, which is only open one week a year. We leisurely travelled up the New Brunswick coast, saw the 40 foot tides at Hopewell Rocks and the tidal bore in Moncton, took the ferry across to PEI (this was before the bridge across the Northumberland Straight), spent a few days exploring there, then took the ferry back across to Nova Scotia and on up to Cape Breton Island. We camped, we stayed in inexpensive hotels, we ate fresh Atlantic salmon caught in the Bay of Fundy which we cooked on a campstove in a Provincial Park in NB. I paid the children their allowance in Canadian funds (with a modest addition), and they had fun buying things along the way. It was a great vacation which each of them still talk about to this day. Remember when?.......

I suppose it depends on the definition of "Best" The most enjoyable and relaxed was 6 or 7 weeks driving from Brisbane to Far north queensland and stopping each day at a five star resort for a few days and exploring the local area. Ferry trips out the the Whitsunday Islands and such. Really taking our time. After staying in Port Douglas a week and then heading up into the Daintree forest we drove back to cairns and took a flight home.
The most luxurious was a week in Dubai with everything laid on for the group. ( I was part of a performance award event) Dune bashing in 4WDs, dinner in the desert, Lawrence of Arabia style, complete with Belly dancers and falconry demonstration. tours of the sights and markets, trips to the worlds biggest shopping mall and the tallest building and a beachside 5 star resort.. All on someone elses dime. The flight there and back was coach. But you cant have everything.😷

@windinhishair Then you will love the Western 2/3 of the continent.😷
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@whowasthatmaskedman There is no doubt about that. I wouldn't mind starting at Perth and driving around the coast until I can access the interior.

@windinhishair Nice! Two options, Drive East to Adelaide, or North up the West coast all the way to Sarwin. Both Are safe drives providing you have a decent car and carry a phone and water. But stick close to the highway. 😷

When I took my sons and my mum to St Ives in Cornwall. It was only a week, and a bit of a treck to get there all the way from Scotland, but it was a perfect week, with gorgeous weather and the best of company.

@Egg01 wonderful!!
Egg01 · 56-60, F
@SilkandLace2 it truly was. I have so many good memories of it 😊
SilkandLace2 · 46-50, M
@Egg01 yes, that's how I feel about mine, it was a chore for my Mom and Grandma to get it all together I'm sure, but the last one was all my Mom's side of the family, one cottage for 16 people I think, it was so nice

It's a toss up between Portugal and Ireland.

@SW-User Portugal is great! I spent some time there working on the Gabinete da Area de Sines south of Lisbon, but travelled all over the country.

@windinhishair It was a really wonderful trip. The food, the wine, the Algarve, the paradores and pousadas! Loved every area we traveled through.

England and Scotland, traveling alone. I wish I could do it again and again.

Family holiday to Greece when I was like 8. We pretty much never left the hotel but the hotel complex was the size of a small village and all us kids just went wild roaming around the whole time. It was mad and, in hindsight, I feel bad for all the adults trying to relax while a bunch of sugar-fuelled children chase each other around corridors/jump off balconies/lock ourselves in the hotel church

I've been fortunate enough to have many wonderful holidays, but perhaps my first foreign trip - to Switzerland - has never quite been equalled for the wonder of the beauty I witnessed. It was new and so very different from home and the trains were fantastic. 1981.
