Americans, where is good to go on vacation in the states?

I am traveling alone to the states next year and have pretty much got the freedom to do what I want / go where I want. Where are some good places to go and things I need to see?
LyricalOne · F
California Coast in a convertible, San Francisco to Los Angeles. New York City. Arizona and the Grand Canyon. The National Parks. The possibilities are really endless.
LyricalOne · F
@SW-User Yup, I’ve done it. Fantastic!

@GoodoldBob actually Europe is slightly larger than the USA in population and square miles. On a map overlay the USA looks larger but if you filled the gaps with Spain, Portugal, Scandinavia, include Iceland its a similar area. Europe has an area of 3,930,000 sq miles.
The U.S.A has an area of 3,796,742 sq miles. Its pretty close
SW-User
@thenightwatchman I think Europe is easier to tour because one could do big cities that are different: Paris, Florence, Prague, for example.

Honestly, it depends on what kind of vacation you're looking for. If you want excitement and lots of things to see, then I'd say something like New York or Los Angeles, you get all the noise and glitz you'd imagine, but you'd see a more realistic first hand view of the cities you don't get to see on the screen. If you're more into a relaxed, laid back kind of visit, then hit something more toned down then something like Yosemite or Grand Canyon might be more to your liking. Something in between could be San Diego for all it has around it or Tahoe. Will try to add a link to some ideas.

@DuchessOfMapleSyrup The apocalypse tour of Detroit, no?

I keep hearing about New Orléans lately. I personally am not interested about any vaca spots there myself but i heard New Orleans is very cool.
DaughterOfTheDust · 22-25, F
New Orleans is great! As long as you’re not just here for the partying and drinking scene. There’s lots of culture and history to experience @DoubleRings

@thenightwatchman Friends if mine go there a few times a year. they can’t get enough of the culture the food, the history, the art. their house is adorned with all things New Orleans.

Don't overlook Boston. It is a great place to visit. Not as crowded as NUC but has a lot to offer. I don't mean anything negative about NYC. I went to Texas once and was very disappointed. I will never go to Texas again. Were ever you go I hope you have a wonderful vacation
SW-User
@Shannon27 See! I said skip Texas. Maybe a Boston - New England jag..maybe.
ExploreroftheUnknown · 26-30, M
The month you come can make a big impact on good destinations. I live in Texas and saw a reference to the river walk. That place is very nice but I don’t think it’d be too enjoyable alone. Id suggest renting a car and driving along the west coast. Look up little spots to stop at along the way. There are plenty of places to see.

Whispers..."Go West ..."😊
DaughterOfTheDust · 22-25, F
You have to see the San Antonio Riverwalk in Texas. It’s like Venice, but in Texas. So beautiful out there!
DaughterOfTheDust · 22-25, F
@SW-User No, Texas is great!
thenightwatchman · 36-40, M
@SW-User is it just not that great?
SW-User
@thenightwatchman There is nothing essential unless you're really curious. Austin is fun, but New Orleans more so. And San Antonio is just a mid size city.

omaha, more to do, world class

@mrmoose You're a great advocate for your hometown!
mrmoose · 70-79, M
@SW-User it's a secret, last year tourists brought into omaha $175m
goliathtree · 56-60, M
What time of year? That is a key question.
thenightwatchman · 36-40, M
@goliathtree yeah thats the sort of thing I'm into.
Shannon27 · M
@thenightwatchman Go in April. No matter where you go April has much better weather. Summer can be miserable the heat/humidity especially in the south.
thenightwatchman · 36-40, M
@Shannon27 thats why I was thinking April would be better. I like the heat but I have a limit
SW-User
Depends on what you're in to! Fall brings beautiful colors to WV and great whitewater rafting!

thenightwatchman · 36-40, M
@SW-User fall looks beautiful in the state, but its also beautiful here (just not quite as) which is why I decided to go in spring or summer
SW-User
Which coast? You can skip the middle "flyover" states entirely and avoid Florida at all costs. New York and new Orleans shouldn't be missed.
SW-User
@thenightwatchman Aha! Boston, NYC, then DC and perhaps a jaunt to Virginia or North Carolina then New Orleans.
thenightwatchman · 36-40, M
@SW-User would it be worth flying from NYC to new Orleans? That was something I was thinking earlier today
SW-User
@thenightwatchman Well, those are two cities, so maybe a little break in between for you. I love cities, and those two are very different.
GoodoldBob · 61-69, M
Walt Disney World, Washington DC for the museums, Chicago for pizza and Italian beef sandwiches, Don't miss the Great Smoky Mountains or the Rockies, ... how many months do you have?
thenightwatchman · 36-40, M
@GoodoldBob I have a week to a week and a half. Yes expecting to see much in that time is crazy but I have a big family and can't be away from home too long. This is like a short break alone for me to see and do some things I want to do, so I want to make sure I make the most if where I go.
SW-User
Just got back from Seattle and Portland if you are interested...near incredible nature, too.
thenightwatchman · 36-40, M
@SW-User that might be worth looking into. Portland is in Oregon right? I really should just use google before writing something stupid lol
SW-User
@thenightwatchman Not at all, it's a mid size city. Yes, Oregon. The Pacific Northwest is its own distinct region.
DDonde · 31-35, M
NYC. Go see the statue of liberty, times square, etc.
I've never really been west of the Mississipi (except to see Mt. Rushmore which I don't really recommend unless you have a lot of time to kill).
SW-User
@thenightwatchman Then look into New England, perhaps. Lot's of natural beauty in the South, too.
thenightwatchman · 36-40, M
@SW-User if I was going to do new England I think I'd try Vermont in autumn for natural beauty. But then I started thinking the climate etc is going to be pretty close to the UK. As far as the south I think if I'm heading that way I am set on Louisiana. If that still comes under what you consider the south?
SW-User
@thenightwatchman The South is the one major region I don’t know but I think there are some great places and great natural beauty there. I think you may be right about New England. Too bad you’re staying on the east coast to some extent...the mountains and the desert are great. But it’s a big country...can’t see it all.
Sassyshooter · 41-45
I think we’ve discussed this lol
