I Need Advice

Has anyone on here had a parent with Dementia? If so, how did you handle it? My Dad was diagnosed recently. I've had a tough time with it. He's in the mild stages right now but dementia gets worse. It's not Alzheimer's. It's a different form called frontal lobe dementia. Thank goodness it's not as aggressive as Alzheimer's but still bad news.

Well ... it’s definitely time to start looking for housing . Given the issues that type of dementia causes , he’s going to need trained care. Also , if you don’t already have it , you need to get durable power of attorney granted so that you can manage him and his affairs . All of the paperwork you will need to complete is daunting . Given the look back rule it’s too late to try and hide his assets ... the only thing you can do is hide cash. You need an attorney .

@Quoththeraven You have a parent with dementia?
Yep. They started late. Everything Tex said is spot on. I used an elder law lawyer. It was money well spent. This slipping happened pretty quick. Dementia sucks as it progresses they are there but not there. I’m still going through it @Cloud7593

My mom started getting Dementia, before she passed.
It was difficult for I lived across country from her.
My brother was oblivious.

I would suggest spend as much time as possible. Talk about different subjects.
Maybe get him to do crossword and other activities that keep the mind fresh.

Yes my mom did and it was also frontal lobe dementia, we had a big family with 6 siblings so it was easier for us to always have someone with her but she had to move in with my sister about a year and a half before she died as was no longer safe to leave on her own at that stage , my sister went power of attorney for her so could look after her financial affairs

@Celt43 Mom is still alive which helps. How long did your mom live after she was diagnosed?

@Cloud7593 about 4 years but it was a stroke that she died from not the dementia

Move with him to a medical marijuana state and start him on a Cannabis oil treatment, specifically an indica strain. Research in Israel by Dr. Raphael Mechoulam is proving when caught early enough, Cannabis helps stop the progress of any dementia disease, and in some cases, reverses it. Cannabis as a neuroprotectant has US Patent #6630507
