Wayne Rooney; England legend or international career unfulfilled?

England's record goalscorer has retired from international football. I only remember him playing well in one international tournament and that was when he was 18. Should we blame him or celebrate him?

Don't think blame him as such but I agree he's consistently under performed at major championships. He has the records so that can't be denied but I agree with your career unfulfilled - but then look at the whole team in the last 20 years since 1996 Euros they have all never fulfilled what arguably they should have.

@SW-User I agree. Complicated

@SW-User It is a tough one but I think the current rule is the best. If you said we could pick players from France, then half the squad would decamp. With this rule, you might lose two players from the squad but it's worth it to protect the Guinness Premiership as a top tier competition.

The Australians relaxed that rule and its one of the reasons why their Super Rugby teams struggle so much.

@Burnley123 I know - as I say I'm torn by it as I see it help maintain the premiership but... imaging Armitage alongside Billy in the back row! That could be the thing to push us over the line against the All Blacks etc.

Coming in late here. What a week for Rooney since announcing his international footballing retirement. Obviously its given him a little more time to play on the other field he likes to score own goals on. For this reason alone, he is no legend.

He was certainly one of the 'bright lights' of his generation.
Had good managers and coaches to work with. As did the likes of Beckham; Giggs; Scholes etc.
But as with the rest of that generation, you feel they just weren't good, enough !
Nothing new in that. But it does make you wonder. What is it the likes of France; Germany and Italy do that sees them consistently hit championship latter stages ?
And what is it that prevents England from ever doing the same ?

@Picklebobble2 That is a huge topic and I think there are lots of reasons.

The Rooney generation was never the best in the world there were always at least two or three other teams with significantly better rosters. I think they should have achieved some semi final appearances though.
please excuse my complete indifference.

Football is a team game, so you cannot single out a Rooney for England's failure to win an international tournament. Messi has not yet led Argentina to glory either.

Rooney has not played that well at international tournaments but then the EPL is too long and EPL players arrived tired and not rested at the tournaments.

England legend. Did well considering England as a whole for his entire career have been shite. Not often I will give an Englishman the praise but he is a great and should be celebrated.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@thatscottishguy If he gets praise from a Scotsman he must be good.

All time record goal scorer, 53 goals from 119 games is a pretty good strike rate, but unfulfilled based on his first tournament.

hi Burnley123
Rooooooooooooneeeeeyyy! What was the question?
best wishes
:)
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@sogdianrock Which club do you support?
Zeusdelight · 61-69, M
If he wasn't good enough, surely the selectors are to blame. He didn't pick himself!
lightningblue · 26-30, M
blah legend
but great player
Rakbladsvalsen · 26-30, M
I'm just glad someone else gets to take his place, he's been flagging for years anyway so its a good opportunity for someone else to step up
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Rakbladsvalsen Yeah he hasn't been a regular anyway and Kane is England's best striker now.
thatscottishguy · 26-30, M
Don't worry you have yet another "golden generation" coming through 😂

Mugin16 · 46-50, M
@thatscottishguy In rugby that is the case actually. ;-)
thatscottishguy · 26-30, M
Maybe but that's rugby
SW-User
Imho overshadowed by that idiot Beckham
lightningblue · 26-30, M
@SW-User beckham missed a lot of goals
but he did more than rooney
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@lightningblue They played in different positions so comparison is hard. England players generally underachieve though.
lightningblue · 26-30, M
btw Rooney reminds me of Cisse
sucks in international
I think he's always done well in getting us into the tournament but then fails once we qualify.
