Good question. I think it depends on the situation. If family asked for help I would automatically help because I love them. If a friend asked I would help because they have helped me in the past or because they will help me in future, and because I like them.
An injured animal or person would be helped by me because of empathy.
The real test comes when a stranger who can do nothing for you in return asks for help.
