The Victoria Cross was established in which year?

Apparently the small ribbon for a Victoria Cross looks just like a US Navy Good Conduct ribbon.

Many years ago when I was in the Navy, two of us were sent to the Canadian Forces base in Halifax Nova Scotia for a 2 week conference.

They put us up in their barracks and gave us passes to the chow hall. Both of us were initially very impressed with their chow hall. The ladies there treated us like kings. (But after several days we noticed that they were not treating the other foreign personnel so kindly....???)

With two days left, we went to breakfast and an older grey haired lady leaned forward from the serving line and asked... "Curiosity is killing me, where did you boys get your Victorian Crosses??"

Our reply was a simple "What is a Victorian Cross" and with a look of bewilderment she pointed and said "Those ribbons right there on top".

"Oh those are good conduct ribbons" we replied. And they treated us like common sailors for the next two days...…

I still laugh about it 40 years later....
