Is this legal? At what point should something be done?

In the United States by the way.

So. My boyfriend has a full time job. His employer changed the insurance company maybe 6 months ago, as well as the payment process. He has been getting paid but has no insurance, he has been employed for 3 years without insurance from his employer. Now he's being told he isn't allowed to call in sick because his boss is out of town and hasn't hired anyone else. He has the flu though, lots of vomiting, a fever, etc. He works at a hotel, having to deal with people and touch lots of things. I'm baffled.
Why does he have no insurance and where do they get off telling him he cannot call in sick no matter what. What if he gets hit by a car? Would they still fire him for not coming in?

It's all legal, employers are not required to provide insurance, most don't. As far as calling in sick he can be fired if he does.

They offer insurance but his boss keeps saying "I'll get to it" and that's been about a year of that.

Seems dumb. I would've thought there are some kind of workers rights for that.

@curiosi If they fire him over a medical issue/illness, it's illegal wrongful termination.

Yes. It's called at will employment. As far as insurance, no employer is required to provide it.

But they offer it? The boss refuses to get him the information.

At will employment makes sense even if I think it's stupid, if you're vomiting all over how are you expected to be at work. @SW-User

@GlitterBug even if they offer it, they are not required. If he needs it, he needs to be persistent with his boss or go over his head.

Thank Obongo administration for that; many employers dropped insurance coverage after that fiasco...

I mean, three years and he can't call in? That alone sounds absurd.
GlitterBug · 22-25, F
He rarely even calls in. He was told he can't because nobody can cover his shift. Just seems to me like his manager is shit really, there should be 3 people lined for that specific job. There's only him working 7 days a week. @xRedx
Time for another job.
