How to deal with small minded people?

Like uncles who are angry that you are dating someone from Poland. :/

I live in a small, small town, and people here are so narrow minded. It honestly makes me angry. I lived overseas for a bit and it really opened my mind.

Usually, I treat small-minded people according to how much I fear them. If they have power over me or have ins with someone who does, I kinda just politely state my disagreement and try to move along. If they do not have any power, then I'll argue in a somewhat pretentious way, to make them feel silly and maybe look inward. Unfortunately, you're probably in the former situation.
@BlueVeins I see what you mean. They could have influence on people closer to me, like my parents, and that would obviously effect me. Thank fully, (hopefully) my parents have always said that they support me as long as I'm happy.

@lauriethecolourful Yeah, that's good parenting. I dunno, what are you gonna do?
@BlueVeins There's really nothing I can do about them. People think how they want to think. But I can work on how I react to it, even though it's hard. And I guess if my guy just keeps doing what he's doing, they will see for themselves later. Or maybe not.

@SW-User I agree. It doesn't have to be long, and missing people is inevitable, but you gain SO MUCH from it. I have friends in cultures that I didn't even know existed before leaving.

Feel sorry for them.. their minds are so closed, so judgemental.. it must be so sad living in such a restrictive mindset.. And in the meantime just ignore them.

Let them be them and you be you. We can't change anyone but ourselves.

Small minded is such a boorish insult.

Everyone just does what they do. If their input affects you, learn to counter-act it somehow. Especially if they're so "small minded".
@Rokasu I agree with you. Calling them small minded makes me small minded too, in a way. But I couldn't think of another way to put it.

I guess my guy will just need to stick around and show them that he's not what they think he is. And other nationallities for that matter.

@lauriethecolourful I appreciate the positive feedback. Honestly I was being small minded myself.

No real feedback to give. In the end I have a feeling you'll figure it out somehow.

@lauriethecolourful Ignorant might be a better word without belittling yourself.

I have uncles like that, my cousins and I usually ignored them. One of them actually dictated which career paths all of us were going to pursue, so I asked him if he would personally pay for all of our college then LOL

Educate them through your actions. Words are often wasted. Be an example to follow. Most importantly, do your own thing and follow your own heart.

What country is acceptable to your uncles?
@hippyjoe1955 Probably none other than Ireland.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@lauriethecolourful OK. Just curious.

Tell him to keep his ignorant opinions to himself.
MURD3RM0NK3Y · 26-30, M
Don't think about them.
@MURD3RM0NK3Y I know, but when you live in SUCH small town, it can be hard.

I think older people are narrow minded
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
@angie8819 well there seem two kinds.. those who, having had experience of life have learned that things aren't black and white and that there's an infinite array of reasons why people do things so we shouldn't judge.. and those who perhaps started out narrow minded and just become more and more entrenched in their beliefs and dogma.. Good thing is most older people are the more open minded kind
