What do you guys think of this?

A company in Australia offered my dad a job. The first thing he asked them was what was the possibility of residency, because he didn't want to move his family's entire lives half way across the world for a few years. They told us in 2 years we could apply and they would sponsor us.

We go and we love it there. Made a ton of friends. Thought we would live there forever.

2 years come and they tell us to do another 2 years.

Those 2 years pass, and they say "Well, actually, it's too much money, so byyyeeeeee."

We contacted immagration and they told us there was no way we could stay despite living there for 6 years. They paid for our flights but that was it.

That's horrible, but sadly it's how capitalism works. When they need you, they'll promise you anything. When they don't need you anymore, they don't care what happens to you.

@GallantlyChurlish yep, which is a sad part of capitalism.

How so?@SW-User

@GallantlyChurlish the health of workers is only important as long as it's beneficial to the company. After that they couldn't care less if a former employee lives or dies aa long as the company keeps making money. If that's not a sad element to you, I don't know how to explain it. And the worst part: they don't even deny it. The department dealing with personnel is called human resources, because that's all they are: something to be used.

It's pretty much the nature of working as an expat. Permanence is hard to come by. Most people tend to return sooner or later.
@SW-User But they lied to us. My dad was a good worker and intended to work for them until he retired.

Moving back really screwed us over.

Sounded disingenuous to me. Getting permanent residency is never guaranteed!
@Sterler45 We understood that. But they told us they would sponser us and give it a go. In the end, they refused to even send through the application because it was "too much money."

That’s horrendous. I just hope everything is ok now or at least on the mend.

Pretty messed up if you ask me. Does he have any this in writing?
@SW-User He has his contact, but no where on the contract does it guarantee residency. It doesn't say anything about it. Not asking for that in writing was a mistake that we regret, but even if we did, how could we take a big company like that to court or something?
SW-User
@lauriethecolourful If you had it writing they would have honored it. It sucks.

Could he not find another employer willing to sponsor/hire him?
@GallantlyChurlish No. He was a bus driver, so there isn't exactly a lot of companies willing to sponsor 3 random Irish people. The company that screwed us over are probably one of the biggest bus companies in Victoria, so they definitely had the money.
GallantlyChurlish · 46-50, M
They say “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.”

Pretty cool you got to live abroad, though. @lauriethecolourful

Gotta get that stuff added to the contract, need it in writing or it never happened.
@Sicarium It's a mistake that we regret, but it was something my dad never thought of at the time. He just took their words for it.

That's horrible :(
@Adaydreambeliever It is. :( Moving back here has been really hard on me and it's put a strain on our family.
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
@lauriethecolourful it will do.. you didn't want to return, you were forced to do so.. that's never going to be easy.. And who wouldn't want to stay there - the quality of life is so much better..
NEVER take these things at face value.
Companies only look out for themselves.
