It started as a Christian festival where people were encouraged to visit their "motte" church or the one they were baptised at, held during lent. This then became also a celebration of their mother's.

@InOtterWords I've never been baptised or christened (Not sure what the difference is, if any). If I had been the chance of a church still being there decades later is slim. Roughly 60% of churches in this area have been converted into offices, bars, nightclubs, restaurants or, in two cases, luxury homes.
