Anyone ever use a night guard for teeth to keep them from grinding?

The dentist recommended I get a mouth guard to protect my teeth from grinding against one another while I sleep. I've noticed that I do grind them, when I am trying to relax and fall asleep. They say that my grinding is the cause of a "disk" in my jaw deteriorating.

If you have used a mouth guard, did it work? The dentist was gonna charge around $300 for a custom one but I saw one at Walmart that looked more comfortable. It looked as if it only covers the back teeth, which is what I need. I'm just too cheap to spend the money with knowing if it really helps. Can't return a mouth guard, after all.

I used one in the past and it helped me although it took a while to get used to it. I used to wake up and find I had taken it out in my sleep and would find it in random places.
I had an expensive official one and then a cheap over the counter ready made one and the expensive one definitely fit better and was more comfy. Just a crazy amount of money for something that seems simple.

@iamnikki that doesn't look too comfy.
I'd go for one that goes over all your bottom teeth

@mangomonkey K. I have some cheap mouth guards I bought since it was suggested for this teeth whitening kit I bought a while back. Thank you

Mine said i need it too but it costs way too much plus it's not chronic, just happens sometimes cuz of stress. I am gonna get a cheap one too

@iamnikki Get a comfy ready made one. No point paying that much for a rubber thingy
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@SW-User costs 300$

I had a custom guard and wore that thing out. Dentists here charge $600, not covered by insurance. I had a cheap one and didn't like it. It would be a good idea for me to have another custom one, it's expensive to replace teeth.

@CoffeeFirst Exacly. I see one for $30 at walmart. Dental work is very expensive, especially when you have crappy insurance

I used a sports one, be prepared for drooling

@Jackaloftheazuresand I see a small one that looks like it only for back teeth.

Mine has helped me substantially and has helped overcome the TMJ I was suffering from. I believe cheaper ones can do more damage than good, as they don't fit your teeth precisely, but it is always worth a try before investing in a more expensive set.
