Do you ever realize you don't learn the same history as other countries?

About 70% of our history books in Norway are about Norwegian/Norse history, different vikings and old Norse kings, the like. Most of our history classes covered stuff that I'm certain other countries would never learn unless they searched it up specifically.

We are also taught that the first European to discover America was Leif Eriksson, while it seems the US learns that it's Christopher Columbus... 🤔

Nobody "discovered" America. It was already there, occupied by its own people.
GwydionFrost · 56-60, M
@Madeleine Even those people immigrated. Just saying.
NorthernRoses · 22-25, F
@Madeleine I get what you mean and I do agree, but they *did* discover America. It's something they didn't know of, and as discovering simply means to find something not known about prior...

yeah, here in the US we used to learn US history, your state history and then world history in separate classes. I believe they are not teaching the Christopher Columbus discovery thing anymore but then I don't think they're teaching them much of anything anymore.

I would guess that each country focuses on it's own history more than world history. Yes, America teaches that Columbus discovered America, but some of our history books paint him and the pilgrims as villains.

I'm pretty sure most countries learn their history with a particular slant. And there is, depending on the books author, different takes on that too! At least my history book at the time gave Leif Eriksson his proper due!

I know this. And in the US the government re-writes our history to push certain agendas. So part of what is taught, is not even true.

@imLobo Oh no, they do. Who sets the curriculum? Follow the money trail. Schools get kick backs from the states and Feds for discovering "mental/emotional" illness' in children and recommending them for treatment.

Used to. Not anymore... in like... decades. The only reason, I think, that they stick with him is because he kept the route OPEN for the millions that followed, whereas Leif... didn't.

i beg to differ, i know next to nothing about viking kings. it's definitely not 70% of our history, probably not even20% of our history education

in fact we've gone from the very norwegian centric history education of the early to mid 20th century to a much more global and international history education. maybe your teacher spent more time on the viking era, but that is not the case in most schools across norway

@SW-User What, really?

Var mye Olav Tryggvasson, Harald Hardråde osv her. 🤔

They found viking settlements on Newfoundland from 1000 years ago.

one day we'll get objective views on history.
maybe Norwegian history will be taught by the Dutch, or maybe American history will be told by the Welsh !
countries with no points to score or sabres to rattle. Giving objective; historically accurate views on their respective histories.

Here in the U.S., there is a theory that America is as discovered during the last ice age,

just roll with it
