Legalise all drugs, put drug dealers out of business

whoowho · 41-45, F
Put pharmaceutical companies out of business --- and their lobbyists!

@crossproduct: Me too ... maybe this way we won't have to pay 4 times as much for them!

@whoowho: I get them free on my insurance but I try to stick to old meds whose long-term effects are known. I can't trust research anymore because of the regulatory capture that's pretty much reached totality at this point.

@crossproduct:

You are wise.
World wide drug business is in the billions of dollars every year. And like many other Legal business's it doesn't matter where the money comes from, who it hurts, or how many it kills, as long as money/profit is made.

Do you think meth and heroin should be available over the counter?

@crossproduct: Not so sure. A drug that treats addiction, which can be addictive, doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Particularly when Big Pharma is involved. I'm totally anti-pill though. What I'd like to see is ibogaine, in conjunction with behavioral therapy, allowed in the U.S. But until there isn't big money associated with addiction I don't think we'll ever see much change in the way it's combated.

@Ynotisay: I'm thinking of the common circumstance where people with an opioid dependency suddenly find themselves cut off for whatever reason. IMO forcing people through cold turkey withdrawal with nothing is cruel. There should be a backstop that they can go to that won't kill them or force them to do desperate things to make money.

I'm sure people could pick up buprenorphine habits, but people won't die from them.

Nothing against ibogaine, though, or mushrooms or DMT for PTSD

@crossproduct: Good comment and I agree for the most part. But methadone is still available although it's sort of the same thing of swapping out one addiction for another.
I think ibogaine should get a really good look because it has the ability to instantly stave off the physical need for drugs. And the hallucinogenic nature of the treatment (which is like cracking open your brain) can have some huge impacts. But I believe they're developing an offshoot that doesn't produce the "trip" that comes with iboga. If that's the case, with the right behavioral therapy, it could be a game changer.
Why anyone would mess with opiates is beyond me though. Personal responsibility has to come in to play. That's why I'm against legalization of all drugs despite being a proponent of most recreational drugs. Too many people are predisposed to abusing in lieu of using. That won't change, in the U.S. at least.
