How do you tell the difference?

People always say 'believe in yourself no matter what others tell you'. How do you know if:

-You're doing well and you should keep doing what you and not listen to other people's opinions about you because you'll eventually become successful. Or,

-You're actually wasting your time and everyone is right. But you cant see it because youre so engrossed in your dream. Like you're just pursuing a pipe dream, and you should listen to everyone's advice and do something better with your life.

You CANNOT listen to everyone else's advice. That's like trying to run a race with one food nailed to the floor. If you really feel the need for advice, find someone you truly respect and ask that one person and only that one. Taking the advice of more than one will just confuse you, because they'll probably all tell you different things.

I think you should investigate your dream. Learn all you can about it and what you will need to make it work, and then ask the advice of someone who had the same type of dream and succeeded.

Believing in one's self requires knowing one's self first.

@Xuan12: even if you know yourself, you can't accurately measure your abilities by yourself. . . for example if you're in entertainment (music, acting, comedy, etc). Some people will tell you you suck. Some will say you're good. How do you differentiate between 'not minding the haters and pushing forward' and acknowledging that you actually do suck and doing something different?

Well if you are kind, helpful when you can be, compassionate and don't go out of your way to cause hurt on purpose then I think you can have confidence in knowing your intentions are good ones..

I don't let others rain on my parade. I have my dreams and you have yours.
