Do you think science and religion oppose each other?

RedWidow · 36-40, F
the only area where they can come in conflict is the topic of origin of the universe... and some old book doesnt really stand a chance vs the scientific method there

@Adogslife: My money's on the Flying Spaghetti Monster. ;)

@DrH69: So why are you stopping at your "creator"? Infinite regression doesn't end.

No, science doesn't disprove religion and religion doesn't rule out science. For all scientists know, a higher being could have started the Big Bang and created the universe. Science has proven religion wrong in a few ways, but honestly it's not that big of a deal. It's stuff like, "the Earth was created over millions of years" and "dinosaurs", but the bible kind of explains that in Genesis. God created the world in 7 days, but who knows if they mean 24 hour days or "God-days" which are a few million years each? Time is a concept created by man

Yes. The science is always working with proofs. The religions don't need proofs.

@Soraya: Organized religion relies on blind faith. The old religions were based on observation, rather like science really. :)

I believe that (sometimes) religion opposes science because people feel their beliefs are being challenged. Pope Francis does not share this outlook.
I do not believe science opposes religion. It just reports its theories and findings.
Adogslife · 61-69, M
Religion is just a mental bridge between today's reality and that which science has yet to explain.

In an educated society, science and atheism act in tandem to restrict religious zealotry.
Religion provides two things science never can provide ... faith and joy.

There is no issue with science ... just with scientists.

If I had to jettison my belief in one ... it would be easy to give up science.

@questionWeaver: oh i know religion can be very comforting... its like a warm blanket that protects you from the harshness of reality...

a wise man called religion opium for masses... sure it makes you feel all nice and fuzzy, but the same is true for heroin

@RedWidow: (in your support) I do get your point, but to those of us thought to be heretics, religion is f'ing scary. The whole God vs Allah has the world consumed in strife and millions dying for complete bullshit.

Place me in good ole Massachusetts a mere 400 (or less) years ago and you'd be toasting marshmallows while I was being burned at the stake. That's pretty close to where third world Islam is now. And I'm supposed to be comfortable? I think you've lost your collective minds.

When I walk into your church, I don't feel the comfort of your god or anyone else's. My hackles stir as I watch the robotic masses magically dazed by their incantations. I've always felt the imminent fear of a pending lighting strike, like a tornado finding its sweet spot amongst the denizens of the local trailer park.

Your faith has killed more than a hundred holocausts. No wonder you believe in Hell. You've created it within your proximity, before death, not after.
@Adogslife:

Dog ... am thinking, you are one who should be fearing lightening strikes ... which demonstrates your faith ... welcome!

They don't have to. I think they evolved from the same root. To understand the world around us, and where we come from. Religion has had to deal with things that can't be proved, though, and so has had to assert that it is infallible, whereas science has remained open to query and to change.

The Bible says that the world was made in 7 days, the big bang isn't real, evolution isn't real, that the world is 6000 years old and that the earth is flat.
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@tynamite: Hard evidence contradicts that. Maybe the bible is just a work of fiction.
@tynamite: and science thinks global warming is real .. whats your point?
