Look up self defense of a third party. It is your right to beat him, depending on where you live. Just don't take it too far.

Don't beat him, just disable him so he won't hit your mom. You could always handcuff him everytime he tries to get violent.

Perhaps as a means of last resort. It would likely prudent to offer a warning first, making it clear you will defend her if need be. It's a step fraught with serious unintended consequences; but if it's the only way to help her...? I don't think I could stand by and watch it happen.
