You already made it a bit better today. You shared your concern about losing friends because you have some strong opinions that are at odds with theirs. People seem to think we shouldn't care about that (you can't please everyone, blah, blah, blah...) and just let 'er rip. But like you, I value the friendship of some that I disagree with and would prefer not to alienate them while speaking out on matters of concern. It's good to hear from someone who also feels this way.

You could say, "We have a president who cares more about the welfare of the people than about his ego."
