What is it you do to earn a living? Why?

[image deleted]
I write because I enjoy the adventures it puts me in.
helenS · 36-40, F
I am also a writer: I write user manuals (those which people throw away without reading, only to complain later that their gadget doesn't work at all... read the f*cking manual, stupid!! 🤨), and I also write computer programs.

À Chacun Son Goût! 🌷
helenS · 36-40, F
@OldBrit I think the Fortran compiler is really optimized for number crunching.
Oster1 · M
I love what you do!👍😊🌷@helenS
helenS · 36-40, F
@Oster1 Oh thaaank you!!
🌼🌼🌼 <== flowers for you!
Im a retired international banker....

I established my own foreign investment consultancy company after a while and now I manage projects...

But my most favourite thing is to deal art, which I do as a side job...
@Trippy

Thank you darling... 🤗💕
Coletracer · M
@Soossie One thing you'll never retire at is your interesting art of love toward others. I would make bank on that and anyone that is invested in your heart should treat it as a value higher than gold and jewels. You, my dear, are a joy to know and love by me and many others.
@Coletracer

Trace!! My heart is melting into my eyes... 🥺

I am speechless tiwards your kind and beautiful words....

Thank you my sweet sweet friend... 🤗💕
I’m an executive assistant because it pays the bills and it’s all I know.
Coletracer · M
@Pinkstarburst Aw, that's sad... but.... you have a fallback with your writing!
@Coletracer Aw Darlin’. I don’t have much faith in my writing. I just do that to get thought out.
Coletracer · M
@Pinkstarburst A writer, an author, is their own worst critic. Their work may not satisfy their minds, but in many ways, warms the hearts of so many others... if only shared!
Jammy · 51-55, M
Sales Manager North America for French Manufacturer
Jammy · 51-55, M
@Coletracer It defintely has peks and hardships. Family life is very different with this job. But silver lining is a few years away. roughly 5.
helenS · 36-40, F
@Jammy Non mais j'aime la France et les Francais.
Jammy · 51-55, M
@helenS Donc pas Belge hahaha une farce
Thank you for starting an interesting and sincere inquiry and possibly legitimate answers. I love the sound of your adventures.

I've mostly volunteered (music, singing, songwriting, social media, community and event planning) and was just blessed but it did not support my family or me. When I left the work force about 10 years ago, I wanted to pursue my writing: two books in draft. One "self-help" and one memoir type. Well, I had to relocate and moved to North Carolina where I worked at "jobs" for a few years...and then I realized that I could EMPLOY MYSELF rather than "work for the man" (no sexism intended), I just refuse to work for an hourly wage to make money for someone else; man or woman.

I found that I could help people, serve Humanity and volunteer but be recompensed generously for my time, licenses and knowledge (24 CEs every two years) plus about continue to study at least 10 hours of product training each week. I always wanted to be a Professional and not punch a time clock. And that is exactly what I do as a Licensed Independent Life and Health Insurance Provider in 4 states, adding 5 more by the end of the year. It's nice to write a few policies, probably about 30 hrs a week but I feel like I am constantly "in it" and starting off making easily DOUBLE of what I did "in the office" with benefits and timeclocks. No one pays me and everyone thanks me. I get to help people AND earn a good livelihood, finally...

O MY SERVANT!
The best of men are they that earn a livelihood by their calling and spend upon themselves and upon their kindred for the love of God, the Lord of all worlds. The Hidden Words of Baha'u'llah (Baha'i faith)
Coletracer · M
@MsAlaineEYes Many years ago, I considered getting into the insurance field but it wasn't my calling, I went to Bible College, it was interesting but not my calling, I studied other "not my calling" avenues and fell into construction which became a major love and truly became my calling. Another calling hounded me that had been with me since my early school days and the adventures of Huck Finn, it was writing from my own imagination which served me well through the years. I write because I love to write and if in the process, others find joy in my words, it becomes a bonus.
@helenS Exactly; progressive revelation. Each one is built upon the other. Like seeing only a facet of a diamond at a time. Or like the Buddhist proverb of the Elephant; one sees the Elephant (God) as a tree by seeing it's think tree-like legs, another sees a snack, in it's trunk and something else in its ears...we each see from our perpective...
as Paul said in the Holy Bible New Living Translation
"Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture!" Christianity and Baha'i are closer than most would initially understand at first.
@Coletracer I can hear in your writing that you are at peace and really loving who and where you are in your life. Congrats on finding and fulfilling your calling by what you love and earning a livelihood while you are at it. 🙌
I cook dinner for a doctor and his kids
Coletracer · M
@acpguy She's married to a doctor.... you can't afford her! lol
@Coletracer I'm not that high maintenance
Coletracer · M

@SW-User The dynamic duel... or is it do all?
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
i am a cna, i also restore and sell furniture on the side, i sell weed to my dad in law and ex-boyfriends roommate (lol), i make clothes and sell them on etsy, and currently trying to open another small business on the side where i can sell wholesale affordable medical supplies to facilities and individuals who wouldn't be able to afford it originally
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@Coletracer you tend to notice in life people do one thing. And you find that overtime they get burnt out doing it meanwhile they can’t really venture elsewhere because they have no other experience.

I like to do a lot of things because it never gets boring or monotonous
Coletracer · M
@DeluxedEdition You are a smart one Sweetheart!
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
How nice of you. Thank you! means a lot from someone who has experienced life and has a deeper understanding than I do! @Coletracer
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
I like to write short stories. mostly just for myself. Other then that I look after the elderly.
Coletracer · M
@Thevy29 Looking after the aged is an awesome task and hopefully rewarding. The best thing is if you pay attention to them, you'll have a gold mine of ideas to write upon!
TexChik · F
Lately I just boss people around, because apparently I’m good at it!
Coletracer · M
@TexChik You need to give your husband a little break there...lol...just kidding... maybe...

I bet you are good... at it... bossing... you know... ok, I'll stop now.
Degbeme · 70-79, M
Retired and doing fuck all. 😬
Coletracer · M
@Degbeme A common trait among many at a certain time in their lives... but ... 🤔
Harriet03 · 41-45, F
@Coletracer @Degbeme always wanted to be a Rebel but his mom wouldn't allow him to cross the road!!
Coletracer · M
@Harriet03 I tried that once, being a rebel, but then I got married and had kids... sure did mess up a good thing... but geeze, now I'm single and nothing to rebel against... plus I sold my motorcycle.
Retired. Working on becoming a writer
Coletracer · M
@PrivateHell Awesome idea! My sentiments exactly!
I am a non-writer with offers to write books

Who just wants his life back, so he can return to the career path he likes best ... land and oil.
@Coletracer Thank you Cole ... I am trying!

I may be close to getting my life back
Coletracer · M

@Coletracer Awesome!
Keeper · M
Preconstruction Services - Commercial Construction.
I work on project designs/budgeting anywhere from 3-5 years out to current public bids that are ready to go.
Coletracer · M
@Keeper Me being a retired General Contractor, that I understand! A lot of unappreciated work goes into your job!
Trippy · F
Welder. Because Miracle worker is not a job title.
Trippy · F
@Soossie Indeed. An elite bunch. Make serious bank, but we'll...bit higher mortality rate 😮
Trippy · F
@Coletracer Have used them all but Mig for the most part employment wise . Helps to be a bit bendy 🙂
Coletracer · M
@Trippy 😉
Dlrannie · 31-35, F
I work in the fashion industry and also run a Business renovating and letting residential property 🙂
Dlrannie · 31-35, F
@Coletracer My family has been involved in the property industry one way or another for well over a hundred years so it’s pretty much in my blood 🙂
Coletracer · M
@Dlrannie There's money in that! Stay with it.
Dlrannie · 31-35, F
@Coletracer I will and will still carry on with Modelling and fashion writing 🙂
I'm a public servant because I didn't get an education.
@OldBrit IF ONLY Politicians were public servants; they are elected (albeit fraudulently hence they feel entitled because they know they can't be voted out)and they act like we are serving them. imho
@MrBlueGuy You have a good attitude and a common sense priorities; you are ahead of some who are chasing the almighty dollar.
@MsAlaineEYes Could mean that I'm not ambitious enough xD But honestly I'm happy where I am
Northwest · M
Technology related stuff. Mostly programming, design, and architecture. This is my chosen path, and I love it.
Northwest · M
@Coletracer System design/architecture. As in Software/Hardware design and architecture, not the kind you live in :-)
Coletracer · M
@Northwest lol... I see said the blind man... ok, that's cool too! It's becoming the way of life in this technical age.
Northwest · M
@Coletracer Well, architecture has always been used within non "Architecture" contexts. Its use, however, has increased with the fast rise of technology jobs.
Work .. have been since I was 12 .. doing variety of things from farm work to using my science degrees the last 30+ yrs
Coletracer · M
@Stillwaiting Farm work is an ongoing thing around here and science is always interesting. I remember Mechanics illustrated and Popular Science mags growing up. So much fun, but they may before your time.
Nayla · 51-55, F
Law Clerk full time to pay the bills and sometimes I take clients who are looking for different energy healing modalities
Coletracer · M
@Nayla I had to look that one up... Wow!
There are various schools of energy healing, including biofield energy healing, spiritual healing, contact healing, distant healing, Pranic Healing, therapeutic touch, Reiki, and Qigong among others.
Law clerk is ok but the other is ... could be... interesting and fun!
pattycakechamp · 26-30, F
I'm a wage slave at amazon. Really it's the only place that's hiring that also pays a decent amount, but it ages you fast.
pattycakechamp · 26-30, F
@akindheart Not seattle, but it's a mixed bag for returns. I'd say that the "low value" returns are definitely destroyed, but sometimes they'll resell an item as used if it's worth enough.
Coletracer · M
@pattycakechamp Wow, Good luck with that, and I'll keep you in my prayers. Maybe something better will come your way.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@pattycakechamp ok i have to remember your name. i will have questions!! i love amazon prime btw.
Stocks and odd jobs here and thuuuuur
Coletracer · M
Stocks are great when up... odd jobs can be fun and rewarding... get to meet a lot of folks that way and maybe make new friends.
Tracos · 51-55, M
cool :) what kind of adventures do you write?
Coletracer · M
@Tracos Adventures with a twist of love. Right now working on a historical romance based upon a Trojan warrior, but I have other stories, one that is the adventures of a modern ranch hand cowboy and his boss's persistent granddaughter. Then the story of the heartbroken carpenter that finds life has a way of making a full circle but involves some interesting stops along the way. A few others on the shelf.
Harriet03 · 41-45, F
Nursing, I write on the side.
Coletracer · M
@Harriet03 you are a valued diamond! I'd love to read some of your work. Thank you for helping others.
BitterSweetPotato · 31-35, F
I audit stuff.
Coletracer · M
@BitterSweetPotato As long as it's not for the IRS...lol
acpguy · C
Cathodic Protection testing and design. I do it because it makes my brain work, I normally work when it is nice outdoors, travel to a lot of neat places and make lots of money.
Coletracer · M
@acpguy Ah-ha! I had to look that one up! Interesting even though at first I read Catholic... That threw me, and I said WHOA!....but I recovered when I reread it! Ohhhh Cathodic! Metals! Gotcha!
acpguy · C
@Coletracer It is amazing the looks I get when I tell people in person. They think I sell condoms or crosses I think.🤣
SW-User
Nothing right now. Hoping to be a T.A. once I start grad school and eventually a teacher or professor or something along those lines. I see myself in academia.
Coletracer · M
@SW-User Stay with the dream... We need "GOOD" teachers, got enough babysitters holding positions in a classroom.
OldBrit · 61-69, M
Luckily I'm retired so I earn a living but have to do nothing for it now
Coletracer · M
@OldBrit If you are married, you do something to earn it...lol... Honey do's! Honey do this and honey do that!
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@Coletracer I do have a few of those 🤣 but she's planning to retire in the summer at the end of the school year so some of them she'll be about to do then.
I keep busy now trying to build guitars, writing and playing music and I did write my autobiography last year during one of our lockdowns. So life is good.
Coletracer · M
@OldBrit Nice craft! My best childhood friend was an exceptional musician and bass player. He loved jazz and instilled a love for good music in me as we hung together. I never learned to play but can listen forever!
ABCDEF7 · M
Programmer(Web developer), I like playing with logic.
Coletracer · M
@ABCDEF7 well... that leaves me out... lol
I play with imaginary dreams.
ABCDEF7 · M
@Coletracer Playing with logic also needs good imagination, without which you can't understand logic. So imagination plays great role in both of our jobs.

“Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” –ALBERT EINSTEIN
JoePourMan · 61-69, M
Been in sales and sales management the majority of my life. I absolutely love it
Coletracer · M
@JoePourMan I have done sales and can feel the joy in it
LoveTriumphsOverHate · 36-40, M
Politician/businessman
Coletracer · M
@LoveTriumphsOverHate Politics is something else right now and a very dangerous subject. Especially to those that have stationary closed minds and refuse to look at the whole picture. Nuff said there before harm is done but be true to your constituents and not a puppet to power!
..... Business Man? Great occupation if you are good at what you do. We all must be true to our business and either Man or Woman or Other, we should strive to be the best in the field of choice!
LoveTriumphsOverHate · 36-40, M
@Coletracer Thank you for the sage advice! There certainly is temptation to exploit the position, be that as it may, I have to live with myself. Taxpaying citizens deserve transparency and officials should be held accountable when engaging in malversation. Unfortunately, that's far from the case - and most Americans are too busy chasing the American dream to pay attention to what's going on in government.
Coletracer · M
@LoveTriumphsOverHate As long as you hold true to the people you are supposed to serve, you will go far. Turn against them and misery will follow. I've seen it far too many times. God is in the corner of the just and you know the rest. Great success in your career.
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
I'm a hairdresser.
Coletracer · M
@HairbrushDiva Wow... a down-to-earth job! Hi Sweetheart!

Great profession, get to hear a lot... some stuff you probably wish you didn't but then there's the good stuff too!

Hope you passed the booth rental and maybe are doing your own thing ... that's where the money is.
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
@helenS My name and avatar were also partly inspired by those "Hairbrush Divas" CDs that came out a while ago. Lol :)
helenS · 36-40, F
@HairbrushDiva Yes I know 🤭
SW-User
I assess medical devices for approval in the EU
Coletracer · M
@SW-User A very important job. Hopefully, it's also rewarding.
SW-User
@Coletracer It is, very interesting.
akindheart · 61-69, F
i wanted to teach. now i teach insurance
Dolimyte · 41-45, M
Why must a living be earned?
@Dolimyte Not once it can't be sustained
Coletracer · M
@Dolimyte Nothing in this life that maintains a livelihood comes to you for free and to receive it someone has to produce the energy to pay for it. Should be you earning it and not you getting it at someone else's expense. Earn what you get, even if it's given out of love.
Dolimyte · 41-45, M
@Stillwaiting there is more than enough wealth for everyone to get their basic needs; housing, food and health, met. This includes you.

A system where rock bottom includes a roof over your head, food in your belly and you don't have to worry about the financial burden of getting sick, you end up with far more people actually participating in the economy, everyone wins.
PerfectionOfTheHeart · 46-50, F
I put working on hold several years back to homeschool my kids. Most of my experience was in retail...electronics mostly.
I push papers around my desk bc it’s safe and can’t cause cancer.
Justenjoyit · 56-60, M
Just some dude that makes desions on what to do and spend😊
Justenjoyit · 56-60, M
@Coletracer Exactly👍
Coletracer · M
@Justenjoyit Think wisely, spend wisely!
Justenjoyit · 56-60, M
@Coletracer I do try too👍🤭

@Stereoguy Well, run rentals can be rewarding but stay with the book. Try to write every day even if just a couple of sentences! You can always edit later when you think the story is done. Otherwise, you'll be stuck in a hole before you get to the next chapter.

@Stereoguy The strange thing about these heads of ours. Here today and gone tomorrow, but books! Our words flowing, dancing on paper, captured between the covers of a book, can last until the end of time. Get it written my friend! You are a smart person. I'm sure many readers can and will benefit from what you write!

@CopperCicada The good times, the bad times, the growth times, the rewarding times, all the times that are only acquired through working, earning your way. If you don't understand that then you won't understand why I'm sorry either.
