What would it take to reopen the border? You know, the big one with the United States of America. Yeah, those guys.

It’s an unknowable, like so much else. But it is hard to imagine it happens this year, honestly. The other day the president of the United States said he tried to discourage COVID-19 testing, and he wasn’t joking, because to joke you need a sense of humour, even a dark and vicious one. This president of the United States can no more joke than he can do a backflip, or name all 50 states!

@RadiantRuby Someday I need to get one. I would love to see the Canadian Rockies or the areas around Vancouver. And I want to visit Niagara Falls again.

Sometimes big statistical conferences are held in Canada. I once went to one in Toronto. And one year they held it in Vancouver (but I did not go).

This year it is all virtual! Our boss wanted us to register because it is cheap this year (because it is virtual). Also, there are no travel, lodging, and food expenses. And this year I do not have to give a talk. In past years if I wanted to go I had to give a talk, to justify the expense.

I hope I never have to give a virtual talk. I am not sure how well I would do. There is something about being able to see my audience that makes it easier.

@RadiantRuby On land it's closed until at least July 21. I think Trudeau is playing it right. I bet he'd extend it if he had to. He needs to protect Canadians. We're not doing a good enough job protecting ourselves to let in. Too risky.
