Would you have travelled to Russia (to live) 30 years ago? Or, would you move to any country that is under control by a communistic government just...

For a "culture shock"? In your early 20's when you have your whole life ahead of you?

I really wanted to visit South Africa under apartheid, but got there 15 years too late.

@UpForItNow I'll have to look that up --- apartheid.
@perceptivei racial segregation

@quitwhendone Famously described by its architect, Verwoerd, as "a policy of good neighbourliness." I was motivated by one famous visitor's observation that "everything they say about that country is true." And the act of visiting despite widespread moral boycott struck me as the ultimate intellectual nonconformist gesture.

@perceptivei Soviet Union was fine. I lived there. Well, after it fell apart ....it was literal hell, which will be here also. There was no cash , we lived through barter ...Those years are over tho. I would go back to Soviet Union to the aftermath of split...the 90s-2000s HELL NO TO THE NO TO THE NO
I was offered a state department job in St. Petersburg, Russia once. I turned it down. Didn't want to live there.
