Here is a thought, why don't we instead quarantine the elderly and those most prone to die from the virus instead?

and we team up to provide them with their necessary needs to survive?

Instead of quarantining the whole world and causing major economic impacts why not quarantine those most voulnerable.

historically, isolating/segregating people under the pretense of it "being for their own good" hasn't worked out so well... 🤔
wildbill83 · 36-40, M
@dark548 then that's your problem 🤷‍♂️
dark548 · M
@wildbill83 use your brain more wisely man. We need to save lives while keeping this economy afloat. There will be no time to propagate generalizations about people when we are dead or really poor.
dark548 · M
@wildbill83 I don't think that luxury will be there anymore.
revenant · F
logical but not PC
bookerdana · M
@revenant True but I have many friends with serious health risks(not age) and the people blithely throwing them under the bus for convenience and the economy..there are no words to express my disgust
revenant · F
@bookerdana what do you mean by being thrown under the bus ?
bookerdana · M
@revenant Many posts clearly infer the most vulnerable don't count or count for little...how many even think of their neighbors as they descend on food stores like locust.
Btw it is too late to quarantine the vulnerable as this q suggests..we can only prepare for and try to lessen the inevitable spike in cases. We can only attempt to flatten the curve by testing and contact tracing..otherwise the hospitals won't have
the capability to respond..the genie is out of the bottle
They already were since these people, like myself, rarely get out of the home anyway.
dark548 · M
@Anonymartyr healthy people bring you the food and necessities while practicing hygiene. That way we reduce the # of death which is happening mostly to the most voulnerable.

We save lives for those most prone and we keep the economy going.

because how practical is to stop the spread of a virus?

It's all over the world, are we really going to stop this thing dead in it's tracks?
@dark548 Nobody brings me food, I have to push my walker for miles twice a month to get a little food from the food banks. none of it is healthy for me but I have no options.it doesn't matter if we stop this virus, there will be others and like some in the past, some in the future will be much worse than this. The worst viruses in the past did not have internet to get them hyped into such a hysteria, but they do from now on. This virus has made future viruses all the worse because people will now panic every time someone exhibits allergy symptoms from pollen.

Lots of young people end up in ICU as well, it only affects the elderly faster, give it time to develop and it'll affect younger, "less at risk" people too. It's a slow, shitty disease.
dark548 · M
@Elessar links! or it didn't happen.
dark548 · M
@Elessar we need trusted sources in this situation not word of mouth or rumors.

may be you need to know its treating everyone equally
dark548 · M
@SW-User you make a generic statement like that and then ask me to read more.
SW-User
@dark548 okay virus has been brutal to all age group is all I wanted to type.
dark548 · M
@SW-User define brutal? brutal equally to all age groups or more brutal to some than others?
SW-User
Because it is impossibly impractical
dark548 · M
@SW-User and what we are doing right now is practical?
SW-User
@dark548 exponentially more so than what you purpose
Darkmare · 36-40, F
It doesn't work that way especially when the damage is great. And you think the elderly will listen? Heck! They are more stubborn than kids! We could be stern with kids, but how to be rude to old people? Smh 🤷🏻‍♀️
revenant · F
@Darkmare give them fines ; like everybody else😒
Darkmare · 36-40, F
@revenant Yea, they could. Over here, it doesn't matter whether you are old or young, healthy or weak.. They could get it. It is tough to identify. So it is best for everyone to be quarantined.. Plus, the world needs to take a break from human activities..
revenant · F
@Darkmare well no; extreme majority is elderly being hit and not being able to survive
MissTaken · 36-40, F
Whilst the elderly should undoubtedly be looked after it’s not a virus solely restricted to them and therefore one has to cover for that
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@MissTaken Yes, you are correct that bugs such as colds and flu are seasonal but we have some prior exposure to various colds and strains of flu. There are medications available lessen the severity of flu. We have a vaccine for flu and each year we work hard to tweak the vaccine in order to be most effective towards whichever strains are predicted to be circulating that year. We vaccinate healthworkers and the most vulnerable. With COVID19 we have none of that. COVID19 also kills a greater percentage of vulnerable populations than the flu does. We expect to be better prepared for this virus within 12-18 months.
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@MissTaken My longer comment was actually towards Dark548 and not you. Sorry
MissTaken · 36-40, F
@REMsleep No worries 🙂
Nanori · F
We weren't ready
dark548 · M
@Nanori what's up?
Nanori · F
@dark548 not much, how about you
dark548 · M
@Nanori I'm just trying to cut through the bullshit out there
Adec757 · 51-55, M
And, once this blows through, which it will, what is “the west” going to do about the disgusting state of the Chinese food chain which started this???
wildbill83 · 36-40, M
@Adec757 quite frankly, since they're so keen on acting like a bunch of filthy barbarians (lack of hygiene/cleanliness, food markets that look like a zoo, disregard for public health, ignorance of trade laws/intellectual property/copyrighting, etc.)

Maybe everyone should start treating them as such; cease trade deals, impose heavier sanctions and/or embargos and send their economy back to the dark ages until they toss out the communists and learn some civility... 🤔
Adec757 · 51-55, M
@wildbill83 but The EU and The UK wrangle over food standards..... as you say then sell out to trade deals!
Ironicman · 56-60, M
What age is elderly?
Ironicman · 56-60, M
@Adec757 should a 64 year old go out then?
Adec757 · 51-55, M
@Ironicman only as a rule of thumb.... and would include those with underlying health issues.
Ironicman · 56-60, M
@Adec757 in the UK, to date, we've only received advice and guidelines with little or no enforcement. Our Governments strategy to tackle containment has been vague from the outset causing panic and needless anxiety. I have a feeling London and the UK will soon surpass Italy and others on fatalities.
REMsleep · 41-45, F
The goal is to stop the virus. The sooner it stops being spread from person to person then the sooner we can go back to normal. If only the vulnerable are closeted off then the virus can heavily circulate indefinitely. Also just who exactly is most vulnerable is not always clear.
dark548 · M
@REMsleep how realistic do you think that is to stop the virus. Viruses like the flu are around every year. The virus can heavily circulate I definitely like the flu does every year.
