Is calling a japanese person a jap derogatory?

wildbill8336-40, M
worked with a Japanese guy several years ago named Ben Xie; a lot of people could never pronounce his name correctly so everyone gave him a nickname/started calling him Bonzai... 馃
@wildbill83 I hear ya. I once worked with a Vietnamese named Sum Yung Gai. Everyone pronounced it right but settled for just calling him Yung. This other Asian engineer's name was Saka Moko which translates from Spanish as 'remove boogers'. Us Mexican American fellas just laughed whenever he showed up. It was like uh-oh, here comes boogers.
