It was unreported for a long time....a grad school professor of mine had treated a gay teenager in St. Louis. Mo. in the late 1960s. He died of unknown causes in 1969, but it was an immune disease. Years later, they re-tested and found that he had AIDS....so it was actually around for many years (even in the US) before the first cases verified in New York. Where it came from originally isn’t as relevant as the fact that it’s been around a lot longer than the “first documented cases” reported by the media.

"Documented" could mean a lot of things pertaining to "record keeping," documented doesn't mean first. Aids was first traced among trade routes on the Congo basin:
