How come lately when a person asks how you are and you say you can't complain and they're all "who would listen"...people just started with that ...

I reckon you could probably trace that back to the north of England. I was born in Yorkshire in 1952 and it was a common enough greeting growing up and still is to this day amongst folk 40 yo or more.
