I just received a notice about a petition going around in favor of it and thought it might be an interesting question to pose here.

No bc holidays, even solemn ones, in the US become a reason to drink and bbq and party. The attacks on 911 weren't just just about ending lives and causing destruction but were an attack American culture, beliefs and way of life. What better way to challenge that attack than to carry on living our day to day lives?

@luvnsunshine Well, what do you call Pearl Harbor Day? That day is remembered, especially in Hawaii - but I don't see any picnics or booze on that day.

So you think it's just s day for people to have off, drink beer, and party and picnic? I don't think so. Memorial Day and the Fourth of July have degenerated into these type of holidays. No longer are the war dead and missing remembered, or the celebration of our independence (what do bottle rockets have to do with that?) As for beer and TV, you can have that on any day - including Veteran's Day. Labor Day, and Black Friday. People have these days off, but it's up to them whether they go out to shop (and I don't mean the liquor store) or just sit and vegetate in front of the idiot box. Some people do work on holidays. I did a few times in my career.

When I was a kid in grammar school, when we were in class during these holidays, they ran a long bell tone at precisely eleven A.M. We were expected to pause and bow our heads in respect and rememberance. A holiday is what you make it. Not what the TV commercials say.
