Someone told me they eat pigeon, is that safe?

I find that so nasty since pigeons have so many diseases! Why would anyone get a dirty city pigeon of the street and eat it???? This person has pigeon traps in his back yard yuckkk lol
redredred · M

Pigeon was very common as a foodstuff up until about the 60's.

@Bushranger There are several Lehrer videos. I hope you enjoy(ed) them!

@Byron8by7 I was introduced to his work in 1970 when a guy I worked with loaned me a tape recording of his songs. Been a fan ever since.
Its called Squab

I have a close neighbour who raises Pigeons for food. He eats the babies, called Squabs, less than 4 weeks old. Disease free.
@Gusman Those poor babies.....
Gusman · 61-69, M
@PhoenixPhail I know. People are sick. With all the food available, baby Pigeons?
@Gusman I would like for more people to see this. It really got me to thinking about eating meat, at all.

when you gotta eat, you gotta eat

i do wonder what the chances of contracting histoplasmosis or cryptococcosis by eating pigeons are though
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User you get histoplasmosis from breathing the specific type spores growing on the droppings...I’ve had it. Chickens pens can have it too. As well as nests of blackbirds and other kinds.
Bushranger · 70-79, M
There are specific breeds of pigeon bread for eating, but you can also eat the common homing pigeon. Mind you, the buggers would be pretty tough.
[c=#359E00]it's okay, it taste good. I eat them too, usually fried[/c]
@YukikoAmagi sarcasm????
@RadiantRuby [c=#359E00]no i'm serious, it's sold in where i live but not as popular as chicken or duck. I think.. it taste okay[/c]

Ikr its nasty people just eat whatever animals/birds they get their hands on like cavemen lmao
JimboUk · 31-35, M
No way, they are filthy.
@JimboUk He's obviously a nut lol but he's so sweet sometimes!
JimboUk · 31-35, M
@RadiantRuby Eating pigeons should be an red flag 🚩
ScarletWitch · 26-30, F
No. They lyin
@ScarletWitch Well I never saw him actually eat the thing, I just know that he has them in cages!
ScarletWitch · 26-30, F
Nasty
I would think it would be okay if the bird is thoroughly cooked.
@RadiantRuby I didn't know that. I can see how it could be risky, but still, I would think it's probably safe if it's cooked VERY thoroughly. The facilities which raise chickens are extremely dirty, and I know those birds carry diseases. I wouldn't eat ANY uncooked bird. And probably would never eat a pigeon unless I were starving.
@PhoenixPhail I agree, I'm thinking of becoming a vegetarian as soon as next week and this time I'm serious. My main reason is saving money though lol.... I plan on keeping the habit for a year. I only buy my meat from the local butcher, I'm very picky with my meat. So it's gonna be a fun challenge 😁
@RadiantRuby It will be interesting to see what effect it will have on your health and the way you feel. One of the things which convinced me to cut back, drastically, if not become a strict vegetarian, is the documentary, "What The Health." You can find it here:
