Possibly gorillas. Coco the gorilla knew around two hundred words in sign language.

Well using primates or old and new world monkeys would be a cop out, since they are our closest cousins.
A more interesting species pick? I would say either the dolphin, honey badger, or brown bear

@popmol the honey badger is a determined animal. Its aggressive and ruthless. It’s also very smart. It’s bravery can be an advantage or disadvantage, but I’m leaning more towards advantage
Bears are smart animals, and has potential for bipedalism. They just need an apex predator species for them to outsmart so that selective pressures can rewire their thinking.
Dolphins would take the longest to change (assuming you mean a creature to look like humans today), but I’m convinced their brains are going in the direction where our minds are.

If not from primates, the dominant species would probably evolve from rodents. You'd need a creature with "hands" of some sort, to manipulate tools. Flippers, paws, or talons just won't cut it.

@VeronicaPrincess well they are the handiest :)
