What do you think about people still driving at 98 after Prince Philips accident?

I don't think personally that it's safe..

I care for and respect the elderly but there comes a time they should accept that age isn't an opinion.
SW-User
@Primnproper Oh Im sorry. I dont read him. He must have blocked me. Very sorry.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@SW-User it's ok my sweet, no worries..🙂

@Primnproper Thankyou. :)

I think a solution is needed for old people (or any age) who lose their driving ability but lack access to both public transport and urban facilities, but can't afford to relocate.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Really authorities,officials and doctors could deem them safe if there were tests set in place for it. I was merely saying that even if they were in the circumstances you provided that it's still not a reason to be behind a wheel if they are not equipped to deal with it. The minute anyone gets behind a wheel they have other people's lives in their hands not just their own.
Really · 80-89, M
@Primnproper To be clear: You're not suggesting I said that people who are not equipped to deal with it (for whatever reason) should get behind the wheel; or implying that I'm unaware drivers have their own and others' lives in their hands?

Surely theses things go without saying and they have nothing to do with a licensed driver's age; old or young.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Really thank you for the clarity.

@waleskinder Good one. Here's another old lady behind the wheel (3 minutes - watch to the end.)

I think everyone regardless of age should have to pass tougher testing. It seems rediculous to have tons of people-killing metal hurtling down the road in the hands of people who are not capable.
Really · 80-89, M
@Riverman exactly what?
Riverman · 56-60, M
@Really Everyone who drives should have to regularly prove that they are safe regardless of age. There are plenty of 18 year olds that are absolutely hazards.
Really · 80-89, M
I don't disagree, but would rather see the money (that frequent road testing would cost) going instead to much stricter enforcement of driver education (about what MAKES a safe driver - courtesy, co-operation, self-appraisal, sense of road-users' community and pride in being an effective part of it - AND enforced observance of traffic laws. (Some of which could maybe do with modernising)

"Good driving is a state of mind."
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
That dottering old fool is still driving?
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@HoraceGreenley apparently so..he turned his land rover couple days ago..supposedly the sun got in his eyes..it involved another vehicle..
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
Peaches · F
Then he got another car and had no seat belt on. 😯 I think he's getting too old to drive.🚗
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Peaches he's very obstinate.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Primnproper Doesn’t seem to give a crap if he kills someone else, that’s worse than stubborn. Just look at that photo, he doesn’t seem to be in good health as it is. Can easily afford a chauffeur.
Peaches · F
@Primnproper So I hear! 😯
SW-User
I was surprised to hear that he was still driving at that age. I thought someone like him would have had his own driver. I guess you just can’t tell them!
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@SW-User very true.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
He should be evaluated and tested for reflexes etc.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Primnproper privileged elite royalty, I guess they could care less if he causes an accident and takes out innocent people. He got his new car within 2 days, so he has an intent to drive.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@cherokeepatti he had it within 24hrs...then the police spoke to him about not wearing his seat belt..😱
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Primnproper He needs a driver, too cheap to hire one?
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
If there’s one person in the world for whom a chauffeur is appropriate....
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Harmonium1923 yes definitely..
SweetMae · 70-79, F
My neighbor still drives at 99. We all know to stay out of his way!
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@SweetMae 😁
Freeranger · M
Oh, you Brits and your Jaguars. I think people in your country should at least drop it to 90....I mean 98? Weeeeedoggies! ☺️
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Freeranger ohhh..I beg your pardon my sweet..🙂
Freeranger · M
@Primnproper quite alriiiiiight babe. ha, ha
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Freeranger Smooth..😁
That's irresponsible and stupid
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Underconstruction yes it is..
SW-User
I don't think it's necessarily an age thing. There are lots of dangerous young drivers. I'd be happy to have some sort of retesting for all drivers.
SW-User
@Primnproper That's true, I'm not saying he is fit to drive, just that it shouldn't be determined by age.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@SW-User yes and I do agree but to me at 98 it speaks for its self.
SW-User
@Primnproper Probably right
TicketyBoo · 61-69, F
It worries me if I’m honest. You only have to see the number of cars now on the roads, the idiots (of all ages) and by the time you’ve kept your eyes peeled for all that, your responses have to be so much faster.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@TicketyBoo very true..
walabby · 61-69, M
I always said that I'd hand in my license at 80. When I get there I'll probably say 85.. XD
Governments should give free, mandatory driving tests to people over 80.
Really · 80-89, M
@walabby Here - British Columbia (that's in Canada 🙂) - at 80 you can ask the doctor to give you a basic test of physical abilities. If he issues an "OK" certificate you're allowed to keep driving. If he raises issues you have to take a test with the motor vehicle branch. I believe it can be either a computerised simulation or a real driving test. Advice by an ex-RCMP (mountie) driving instructor is to avoid the computer test because most 80 yr olds are more adept with vehicles and their controls than with keyboards & monitors.

Personally (at over 80 🙂) I'm against age-based discrimination, which is officially illegal in most forward thinking places.

It's not very logical after an accident to jump straight to the conclusion that it must have been age-related. That's true whether the driver is 97 or 17.
walabby · 61-69, M
@Really In Queensland, Australia, you need a doctors certificate after age 75, and they can order a driving test. Family doctors tend to be very soft hearted, though, especially when then tend to be getting on in years them selves. Using my parents as examples, both should have not been driving for the last few years that they were. I agree with the principal against age based discrimination, but the authorities should be more proactive about testing drivers... maybe even all drivers.
DrSunnyTheSkeptic · 26-30, M
South park have a very clear stance on old people driving. In that episode there was a massacre every time old people got behind the wheel looking for country kitchen buffet.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
BrattyMel · 31-35, F
Depends on the person.. you could even say teenagers shouldn’t be able to drive..
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@BrattyMel I do agree but c'mon 98!lol
BrattyMel · 31-35, F
I know, I know lol. @Primnproper
plinkplonk · F
I think it's irresponsible.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@plinkplonk I also..
plinkplonk · F
@Primnproper

I think, by law, they should be re-tested.

I had a neighbor - no lie - who could not hear his car running and he would try to re-start it (it would make that horrible noise). Often times he would get locked in the car (automatic door locks) and he would start honking the horn. One of us would have to come out and tell him how to unlock it. Poor guy.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@plinkplonk they normally do here at 70 but he's way past that...lol
FUNBOY · M
He should have been driving a Jaguar!😂
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@FUNBOY 😁
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
He had an accident?
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@ChipmunkErnie yes overturned his landrover with one other vehicle involved.
