Why are apartments ridiculously expensive to rent these days?

Apparently it has something to do with the banks being tight with construction money. Also, here in southern California, there are a number of illegal immigrants who pile up in overcrowded apartments because the banks won't give home loans to illegals, thus putting pressure on the rental situation.

It is tough. It is the reason I have wound up, in my 70s, living in one rented room and sharing the kitchen with 4 people and the bathroom with two guys. Since I have bladder and bowel problems, waiting to use a toilet is hard and frankly, as the kids say...it sucks.

One thing you can say in favor of having Trump in office is that he is a man who has definitely made a LOT of money in real estate and who knows all the rich bankers who finance real estate deals. If anyone would understand the housing crisis, it would be he. One thing you can say against having Trump in office is that, as far as I can tell, he is doing nothing about it.

If I ever hope to escape this rooming house, it will be by going back to work now in my mid 70s...if I can. I am working on my health problems now and hoping to eventual get the funds to move to a better and slightly less expensive community.

I live in the low desert in the general area of Riverside, California/Ontario, California . Rents for the cheapest one room apartments in the worst parts of this area start at $1400 a month with the prospective tenant coming up with the fees for background checks and drug tests, and good credit ratings required.

This is a symptom of decades of rent control/stabilization in NYC, where middle-class housing is at a huge shortage. The luxury tier escapes regulation, and the only buildings built in the mid and lower tiers of the market are done with public assistance, and rents/building control is regulated. Market rate rentals for middle-class New Yorkers have not been built in decades, resulting in substandard housing in less than perfect neighborhoods commanding a premium.

Because you’re in the New York City area. Sucks that it’s even like that in Brownsville. 850 is actually still pretty cheap though, relatively speaking.

@LyricalOne all things considered yeah but damn

@Astro I feel ya, that’s one of the reasons I’m glad I moved out of New York.

One must learn to live within one's means. Have you seen the size of coffin apartments in Tokyo?

@JoeyFoxx I haven't
