I wonder what it's like to be Sentinelese...

This isn't directly related to the guy who was killed. It just reminded me of them.

Like, what is their culture like? What are their myths and legends? How is their language built up, grammar-wise? What do they tell each other about outsiders to make them refuse outsider interaction with a burning passion?

I’ve been to Andaman islands and from what I remember the taxi drivers used to say that that those tribals were cannibals and hunted/fished for their survival and that their island was approached by the goverment in the 90s with gifts but due to the primitive nature of the tribe, they got hostile, pretty interesting and morbid to think of how one person from modern civilisation with a virus can go there and kill them all lol

I think it is so interesting to truly ponder how a person grows up, what they are taught, and their experiences that drive their actions. It is amazing how the brain can be so easily molded, how we can only think in the language and words we were taught. How perhaps the frustration of life in not asking to exist yet being forced to adapt through reward and punishment makes people resent everything and everyone because empathy has never been demonstrated to them. I like that you ponder things such as these. It helps us look at the roots of things rather than simply get offended and want to destroy the attacker without ever finding the cause of the attack.

Don’t go and try to find out!

@SW-User Oh definitely not! I hope no one tries after this.

Just... food for thought, I guess. It feels like they're in a little time capsule over there.

It’s fascinating....been reading about them and similar tribes a lot lately.@NorthernRoses

actually it is not the first time it happened. in 2006 two fisherman were also killed by them. They want to remain cut off from rest of the world. their immune system is weak against modern diseases. they may die by catching infection from normal people.
NorthernRoses · 22-25, F
@milkforme Yeah, I know. It's happened tons of times, enough for it to be sorta illegal to try to visit (?)

They've been this antagonistic to outsiders since they were discovered, so I doubt that's why THEY want to be cut off...
SW-User
@milkforme Do you think they know what their immune system is and how it affects them?
milkforme · 26-30, M
@SW-User yeah, earlier in port blair during colonial period of british Era, britishers started construction and urbanization and they forced the tribes living there to live in modern ways, some of them died to diseases and some raise their voice against it and thus got killed. after that sentinel people living in sentinel island which is in the west of portblair grew hostile to outside world
I feel like they don't allow outsiders in to protect them from disease and sickness. They dont have the immunities to stuff like we do so simple sicknesses could wipe out their whole population maybe
NorthernRoses · 22-25, F
@Complexconfessions I mean, that's the reason why people aren't allowed to go there, but...
They have been antagonistic towards outsiders since like, the 17th century. I refuse to believe they only think of diseases. Are we the devil in their eyes? I really wish I knew what their life is like 😭
@NorthernRoses I was thinking about all this yesterday lol. Maybe early run ins with other tribes left them feeling like they couldn't trust anyone. I don't know but Im curious as well lol

It's recorded but won't be published by Govt. Of India. The tribe has 12 guys and 3 women. So a total of 15 people. That much is available for public.

@SW-User no one knows for sure but some estimates are up 500

Only one way to find out. You might die, break the law. Either you might end up in a prison or you might get killed. Forget them. Pay no attention to them
NorthernRoses · 22-25, F
@SW-User I don't want anyone to find out 😭 I just wish I magically knew, lol.

I was wondering the same things, especially the latter. Also how come they’ve never tried to leave explore other parts of India.
