Have any of you other guys on SW run into this?

I've gotten PMs out of the blue, from several girls I don't know - at least a dozen in the last couple of years. They'll be anywhere from 20 something to mid 30s. They'll say they're new on SW and are looking for friends. None of them have any posts, and, after a short flurry of exchanges with them - just shootin' the breeze - they all start up with the same prying questions; where do you live, are you married, do you have any kids, do you live alone, in a house or an apartment? That kind of thing. In the process of chatting, I come to find out they're all from Ghana or have some connection to Ghana. Is there some mail-order-bride business or something that operates out of there? Whatever it is, SW is being used as a platform for something very peculiar.

OMG, you should alert administration right away. that is real, I think they call it the Ghana scam. I got that on the sit "travel buddies". this person saying they are from Ghana, then they have a variety of ways to suck you in. either become friends and then say something about a sick mother or something. mine started saying she is European but was in Ghana to go to a gold investment conference, then started saying how she always hopped to find someone like me(like we chatted for 10 minutes !!) I didn't continue, it was obvious she was trying to get me into this fake gold investment thing. I stopped the conversation there then messaged the administration. its very serious, I would even consider calling the police.
@reflectingmonkey I don't think calling the police is necessary. I'm not in any danger. But it would be interesting to see if anything can be done about it.

@PhoenixPhail I was more thinking in terms of preventing them from doing to others, not to protect yourself.
@reflectingmonkey I can't imagine any way to prevent anyone from using SW, or any site, for that matter. It would be like trying to catch a hacker.

Welcome to the internet.

Which is why it's good to check someone's profile before answering an unsolicited PM. Sounds like a scam and maybe not female. So have you learned your lesson?
Ambroseguy80 · 51-55, M
Yes. I’ve seen a few of those every so often it seems. Best advice is to drop the convo. They go away pretty quickly
abe182 · 46-50, M
Yes but I didn't let it get that far. If someone inboxes me I first think Catfish.
walabby · 61-69, M
Yep. I've had them. It's a scam to get money. The "girls" are probably not even female.

Sounds like those Nigerian scammers are out in full force again.
