A polite fiction is a social scenario in which all participants are aware of a truth, but pretend to believe in some alternative version of events to avoid conflict or embarrassment.

That is the new leftist ideology in a nutshell! All truths that are inconvenient or conflict with the desired narrative are dismissed or altered by the status quo. There is really no such thing as 'revisionist truth' but the new liberals are trying to force that very thing on society.

@ScabbyHeart Sure, I guess. Republicans will say this is what Democrats do, and Democrats will say this is what Republicans do. Ultimately I'm uninterested in political labels.

Keep in mind that a polite fiction can happen within a family. Maybe your family doesn't discuss certain family members and their problems (let alone their political positions) at the dinner table because they want to maintain the calm.
