Can anyone tell me what the point of verification is?

As near as I can tell, the main reason that moves people to "verify" their account is that SW administrators want them to.

Besides that reason, some members seem to honestly think that offering up "proof" photos to confirm their real identity makes them more trustworthy, or protects them from people who aren't.

I've seen this happen - and fail - on other social media sites. People who choose not go along inevitably fall out with those who do. And other research I've done has turned up numerous risks to identity theft linked to facial recognition hackers.

The only ones who seem to benefit are advertisers and admins who profit from an additional layer of personal data they can exploit.

But people will always find reasons for doing whatever they choose to do.

I'm not "verifying" anything, and honestly don't care if it drives certain people away. I'm not that desperate for anybody's approval.

I guess the site ethos is taking a 180. Anonymity used to be emphasized so that people would feel open to express themselves in groups and stories that they may not wish to otherwise.

I post pictures of myself a lot and this seemed a good way to verify that they’re mine. I didn’t see a downside to it since there are already pics of me in here so I tried it out.

Just for a green checkmark and the ability to say, hey I am really this person in said photo.

For (paranoid) people who use this site as a dating vehicle.

Who else would care???

Photo 2 is for if you put out any photos others can look at your *verified* photo to compare that it's the same person..

Because people appreciate being able to see you and know you're real.

I think it's an attempt to cut down on fake accounts. I get that, I do, but this is the [i]internet[/i]. Caveat emptor.
