Dad jokes are just bad puns, generally speaking. Not sure of the origins of referring to it as a 'dad joke' but I do know that the Japanese word for it, dajare, is an example in itself. The word can be translated either to mean 'wordplay' or 'old man,' intended to imply they're jokes old men would make and specifically refers to pronunciation-based puns.
