Fascinating. Regarding the first one, I'd heard of Libet's work, which definitely casts doubt on the existence of free will. I've always thought that free will, like the soul, God, life after death, etc. is something we take on faith without evidence. The difference is that the illusion of free will is remarkably strong; everyone feels as if they have free will, and our legal system and interpersonal relationships are built on the assumption that we do in fact have it.
