How do you feel about the way schools often seek to control how girls dress

on the basis that it is just too distracting for the boys?

Personally i feel that objectifies young women and gives young men too little credit.
Just another example of women's bodies being considered offensive or inappropriate.

If you want to tell girls that they can't show their shoulders or belly or legs then you better make damn sure that the guys aren't allowed either.

For me you're at school to learn not be dressed to the nines or made up for a night out..and uniforms can stop the competitiveness that comes into play between the more privileged and under privileged kids as in designer wear..
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Celine see you said it right there.."boys and girls will never stop trying to look good for each other", both sexes are going through puberty, hormones are racing and that is not the time or place to put it under even more pressure..again it's about learning and discipline the same thing we get from our parents so just deal with it..you have plenty of years to dress as you like and if you talk to these many girls in later years they regret many of their choices because of how they were perceived, you can't ignore it , it happens..

@Celine let's face it girls dress that way to get attention however you try and pull the "we should be able to dress how we like for ourselves" is utter bs..it's just how you said we will never stop trying to look good for each other..once we have the experience we realise what's important and its not how much flesh you show..and they are definitely not the kind of girls guys like to take home to meet their mother, just look at the surveys guys tell it how it is, those girls are the good time girls not the keepers.
I'm an educator and could care less what people wear to class. Telling women to cover up because it is distracting is just code for having no commitment to mentoring young people. Mostly young men.

That said, I can not count the number of times I've been like WTF at how women dress in the lab. Open toed shoes? Heels? Cleavage, bare belly? Pulling a short skirt down every 2 seconds? Seriously? No. Just no. No.

@Celine Sure. It's safety. But it also reflects poor judgement and a lack of introspection.

I think there is a fine line between dressing provocative and dressing decent. Some schools go overboard and set ridiculous rules like "Girls can't show their shoulders". Do I think schools should have a dress code in place? yea. When i was in high school, most of the issues were with boys wearing their pants too low and that too was a distraction because they couldn't go up and down the stairs that fast.

@Celine I'm pretty sure if schools didn't have that in place, some students would show up wearing that..lol.

@SW-User I have but Im from Hawaii. Those guys get sent home anyways.

@Celine When they walk onto school??? Yes it is. Just like going to work.

Many schools have gone to prescribed clothing and even uniforms simply because there is no good way to hold everyone to a standard of appropriateness because it is all subjective.

Is this a better solution, to remove the options, girls and boys all having to wear "standard" clothing?
Footballstar · 26-30, M
@Sharon here its all pretty reasonably priced and most stuff will last until its grown out of and can be passed down
Sharon · F
@Footballstar Is that the Republic of Ireland? Here, in England, a lot of schools see uniforms as a cash cow and another way for power crazed headteachers to exercise control over students and their parents.
Footballstar · 26-30, M
@Sharon yeah in Ireland
PennyHenny · F
Dress codes go both ways. We had boys sent home constantly for their shorts being way too tight or those stupid half shirts.

School is for learning, not preening for attention then complaining when it causes trouble.

its shitty, iv always went to a girl school so being in a school with both now its just weird when the secretary complains , um we're all adult here
whateverhappens · 26-30, F
also to point out its tank tops she doesnt like cause of " its distracting" nothing is showing aside from shoulders
Kids should be focused on studies, not the person sitting across from them.
@Celine boys will be boys.

Also the school is at fault here nit only afe boys staring or trying to touch the girls but school cany stop looking or making sure girls dont show any skin teachers complain cuz lil john doe cant keep his dick from getting hard cuz a girl had a skirt on well maybe uf school spent less time looking down a girls top maybe it be better the student are there to learn true but its not 1920 anymore ohhhh noooo a girl showing her belly better send her home before a boy or teacher gets excited we dont send girls to school so they can be pervv on by boys or the school ..........

I never saw one guy showing off his shoulders or belly or legs while in school... except PE class..girls nowadays in highschool deliberately dress like hoes n sluts, so there in lies the problem

I think the school is being realistic and not objectifying girls.
Let's face it, if a girl shows that much skin, a boy will be distracted, especially at such a young age when they're just beginning to get in touch with their sexuality.
So it's a good idea to dress modestly and keep a check on all the potential trouble.

I agree!!! Maybe that's why hs guys act the way they do. Because no one expects them to act better. Stop punishing the girls! I hate that I have to have a totally separate wardrobe for school because stuff I wear away from school would apparently make guys' brains shut down.

Least from what I see, most guys at the high-school do wear a lot of jeans or t-shirts. I have never seen one show their shoulders(though for me, even if they did it's not a big deal) They tend to be more overall covered(least from what I see at the high-school).Women at the high-school tend to show more fashion variation and more skin(from what I see). So maybe the contrast between the two can make some uncomfortable, I don't know.
I consider a school environment to be a work environment, so I believe a dress code with some variation would fix it all.

@Celine I don't think they try to.I hope not at least.
Davidarendale0 · 36-40, M
The guys aren't allowed to either. And also they don't have dress codes because the female body is inappropriate it isn't. The dress code exist for the reason you stated that it's a distraction. guys are going to be distracted buy exposed female skin. It is an inescapable fact of life. School is a learning environment and they want the students to focus on their education while they are there. They don't want the girls competing for the attention of guys and guys ogling the girls all day.

BuullllllSHIT buddy.
When i was in highchool did i look at girls? All the time. Did i look at them when their skin was exposed? All the time. Did i look at them when their skin was not exposed? All the time.

And yet i still managed to do well enough on my tests and assignments. Because we can still fucking function even if you can see a girl's thigh!🙄

@Soccergirl2016

Sorry, are you under the impression that if you have wood you can no longer function?
And yeah, of course they got erections. They were teenage boys. Riding in the frigging car or making cereal could give me a boner at that age.

The point here is twofold:

1) Guys do not become helpless horny zombies incapable of concentration if a girl wears a short skirt. Not to mention this pretends that guys are only distracted by girls when they have revealing clothing. NOT the case, i assure you.

2) Even if some guys have trouble concentrating then that is their issue. It is up to them to learn self control. It is unjust to control how an entire gender may dress so that a few horny guys aren't exposed to their distracting flesh.

@Soccergirl2016

The reason girls try to be attractive is to be attractive to boys......yes....and?
Did you feel that was a rebuttal to either of the points i just made?

Teenagers are trying to be attractive to other teenagers?!
Shocker. Maybe we should make sure they have a demur hair style or can't wear jewelry, makeup or perfume. OH OH OH! Get them in some burkas so that we're not encouraging girls to give their poor classmates boners!

Come on, dude

In my school the uniform was the exact same for boys and girls except girls could wear skirt or trousers and guys only trousers

@Clairebare well when it was hot it sort of was, would have liked the option of shorts or something

Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
The problem is that boobs hang out all over and skirts are up the ass so if parents can’t be smart enough to parent the schools should step in.

The real reason is that schools are run by control freaks. It's the same in the UK where some schools even dictate what colour socks students wear.

There's no simple answer here.
Sharon · F
@mathsman Libraries and schools are both council provided and funded services, free to their users. How about college? They provide educational facilities just like schools. In some cases for a fee (same as private schools) and sometimes the fee waived or publicly funded like a state school.

Students are similar to customers in that they use a service for which the provider is paid. Maybe a better analogy would be with a health centre's patients. Are you required to wear a uniform to visit your GP? I'm not. :)
mathsman · 70-79, M
@Sharon Minors are "required" to attend school. That's the significant difference.
Sharon · F
@mathsman Even if that were true (it isn't) I don't see what difference it makes. It sounds very much like saying it's OK to exploit parents because they're unable to shop around for a better deal.

Parents have to provide their children with an education, not necessarily send them to school. Local authorities are required to provide suitable facilities, free at point of use. By forcing parents to buy overpriced uniforms form designated suppliers in order to us those facilities, they are, in effect, charging a fee for them.
MinMan80 · 41-45, M
If they could get the guys to wear pants that fit it would be nice
MethDozer · M
I think it's good for schools to have strict dress codes.

All this hooplah that it's unfair to girls is crap. The fact is that there isn't droves of boys dressing like adults ready to go to the club to get some like there is with high school girls. Men's and boys fashion just doesn't have that aspect so the point being made is moot. It's not l;ike if boys started showing up with skin tight bikini shorts and a cod piece in their crotch while wearing a belly shirt made out of netting that it wouldn't be taken to issue as well.

@Celine Well when you describe miniskirts it's only natural to address them. Sorry, but just going on your descriptions.

Your use of passive-aggression makes the my emotional remark hold weight.
Sharon · F
@Celine
It is unfair because they're being controlled and boys are not. Why is that?
I don't know about where you are but here, in the UK, boys and men face far more restrictions on how they dress than women do.

What we really need is teachers who spend their time and are capable of doing the jobs they're paid for, not wasting time imposing petty, pointless and stupid rules. Students have been known to be sent home because they were wearing the wrong colour socks!.
