That was the 2 only ways out of the lifestyle I lived when I was a young adult and I was more prepared to die violently than a lengthy gaol sentence. I was just one of the lucky ones to have the 3rd option “get out while you still can”.

30 year sentence, they get regular meals, they're allowed to work, they take lessons, get privileges for good behaviour.
If I can do my art and tailoring course why not
