Ever wondered why Port is traditionally 'Passed to the left' ?

One of those odd traditions we encounter from time to time. And given that may of us are about to enter the 'Christmas Do' period, i thought i'd try and find out just why we have this tradition.
Best i could come up with is this.

i'm guessing it is becasue "port" in nautical terms is "left"

@Newandimproved See i thought that too ! Like perhaps it was a Navy tradition ! That would make sense, right ? But it seems nobody knows for certain. And i love that line as to what to say should the bottle not continue to pass along the table !

Is it because port in a ship is the left?
