Why didn't Ned demand a Trial by Combat?

hi Pureblossom
GOT - Ned? Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North. The childhood friend of Robert Baratheon, Eddard ("Ned") was a key player in Robert's rebellion, helping to win the throne from the Targaryens. He is married to Catelyn (Tully) Stark.
I think he was told if he confessed he would be set free and his family would not be harmed.
Best wishes

@sogdianrock yea but he only agreed to that towards the end, how about all the other time he was sitting there waiting to be beheaded.

Yes it is a good question. Ned was a bit stodgy I guess.

Could've been for a bunch of reasons. The concept of trial by combat went against his religious views. He was under the impression that he was getting sent to the wall to be with his brother and son. Maybe he realized he'd be having to fight either The Hound or Jamie and didn't stand a prayer of winning .
