I usually get a small potted houseplant. Unless you know a specific snack/treat they like. That always works.

or extra office supplies.

or a carpool them to work.

or give them a tapped to the max fare card.

for general purposes of functional gifting... things that are useful that can save them the time, effort and money.

Get them one of those calendars that has the pictures of something you know they like. Like dogs or cats or horses or scantily clad women. Most everyone would like a nice candle. Yankee candles are quite nice. A gift card for something like Starbucks or Whataburger or somewhere you know they like.
