In an election for president (or prime minister if you're a Briton) would you vote for someone who does not believe in god? [Spirituality & Religion]

I am quite surprised just now upon reading a poll which suggests that the majority of people in many western countries would be less likely, or even refuse to, vote for a nonreligious person.

I'd vote for whoever makes the most sense to me. What they do in their free time doesn't interest me.

Religion, most notably Christianity, is tied to the value system that much of western society shares. Also, I think there's a certain logical fear that people have of making someone powerful if they don't believe that there is a higher power above them.

Of course.

I hope he obeys and respects the Constitution.....I couldn't care less if he/she doesn't believe in imaginary gods in the sky.

@PissAndVinegar Exactly. Party /Creed over country. Never a good outcome.

Personally more likely but I'm not going to Base my vote on religious leanings, it will be that persons policies that matter.

I'd be much more likely to vote for someone who didn't believe in a myth, especially if they had the courage to say it.

Australia is not one of those countries. We have had a number of atheist Prime Ministers.. all from the left side, though...
Religion plays no part on my decision.

@PissAndVinegar Clearly but I don't think that will be an issue unless you go to a religious school.

Yes.As an atheist I would welcome a non believing PM.

I wouldn't know if the current or past ones believe in god.

I don't vote, but I'm pretty sure our PM is not religious.

I dont care, its what he wants to do
I don't understand that.
If I vote for a political leader my hope is that he respects and abides by the Constitution.
What he does with religious books in his personal life is not something I care about. He could use the Bible, Koran or the Torah as a door stopper and I couldn't care less.

Its a sad reflection on how little our society has really progressed when a person's superstitious beliefs are seen as a criterion for his or her ability to direct a nation's secular affairs.
