I wonder if christians realize what happens when you die. [Spirituality & Religion]

I know for a lot of christians the idea is that you shuffle off this mortal coil and start partying hard in HEAVAAAAN!😎
I think that's what most people think when they think about it at all.
But what is the biblical support for that idea? As far as i know, when you die you go to sleep. And you stay asleep until christ returns. And THEN you gut up into heaven.
Oh dear .🙄 Do sane people really believe all that hogwash ?

@MetalGreymon: We're all insane in our own ways.

@MetalGreymon: Agreed. Their intelligence just disappears in their worldview. They're otherwise intelligent and sane.

@Peekaboo:

It definitely appears to be a blind spot. But i expect we all have that problem. Just with less obvious biases.
taintedprincess · 46-50, F
Noone knows what happens when you die. People only have their beliefs. I believe nothing happens. You are just dead. That's it.
MetalGreymon · 36-40, M
@Ynotisay:

I couldn't honestly say about that. I'm not sure what happens to an atom when you split it to make a nuclear reaction.
Ynotisay · M
@MetalGreymon: Splitting an atom doesn't eliminate an atom. While it's obviously impossible to prove the idea that atoms are, in essence, eternal is where we are in terms of understanding them.
MetalGreymon · 36-40, M
@Ynotisay:

Yeah could be.
UndeadPrivateer · 31-35, M
Most Christians aren't even all that well educated on the actual content of the Old and New Testaments, so probably not. Assuming their text is correct in its assumptions about the afterlife, they'd be pretty likely to be intensely confused after death.
UndeadPrivateer · 31-35, M
@puck61: Pretty much.
MetalGreymon · 36-40, M
@puck61:

"The stories and information posted here are artistic works of fiction and falsehood.
Only a fool would take anything posted here as fact."
Jeremiah 8:8
Kind of a loose interpretation, but the spectrum keeps growing!!
TinyGiant · 26-30, M
That's what absent from the body and present with the lord means.

There is no more purgatory.
Now if you're talking about that last from revelations when all the old saints are raised up, then I'd like to know too.
MetalGreymon · 36-40, M
@TinyGiant:

Dang, it's almost as if the bible is a tad contradictory lol
TinyGiant · 26-30, M
@MetalGreymon: I won't lie, there are many head scratchers. Which is why I study so that I may later understand.

Besides, it may be an issue of context or misquoting.
MetalGreymon · 36-40, M
@TinyGiant:

You'll have to talk to the 7th day Adventists about that.
Whatever you want to say about that denomination, they have their bible down cold. They're very keen on an accurate representation of what the bible actually says.

For the most part
DiamondInTheMud · 31-35, M
Hell happens. You burn in an everlasting fire. Not sure you body will last forever though
MetalGreymon · 36-40, M
@JP1119:

It seems awfully tricky for people to discern metaphor in the bible.
Nevertheless, the idea that people die and "sleep" until the resurrection is concrete
DiamondInTheMud · 31-35, M
@MetalGreymon: no. It can't be. When you die, the elements of your body disperse into the ground, get absorbed sometimes by plants. Someone else might eat that plant. So what was once in the body a native American can now be in yours. If you died last, the resurrection comes, what body will you or the Native American have, given you were both good people who should be saved?
MetalGreymon · 36-40, M
@Urchoice:

No idea. I guess that'll be up to god to sort out
Goralski · 51-55, M
Except if you're a saint
hunkalove · 61-69, M
@Goralski: What's it like, Gor?
Goralski · 51-55, M
@hunkalove: its not easy in this day and age
MidnightRadiant · 36-40, F
The concept of "heaven" is simply a need for most mankind to have a reason to carry on living. Could you imagine the hysteria if it were proven that there is no afterlife? The faithful's entire reason for living is for that big buffet in the sky.
MetalGreymon · 36-40, M
@MidnightRadiant:

It's definitely an important ideology for many people
MidnightRadiant · 36-40, F
@MetalGreymon: just imagine how "Christian" they would behave if their moral compass and motivation were obsolete. I'm sure there is a heaven and God will reward their selfish reasons for not acting like complete animals.😏
PlumBerries · 31-35, F
[c=#7700B2]well your brain us still active for like 7 minutes after you die that is apparently like a dream state.. Maybe those 7 minutes will be their short time in heaven... Or not[/c]
MetalGreymon · 36-40, M
@PlumBerries:

Could be. Although of course that might just mean there is still activity in your brain and you're just not quite dead. Or it could mean that there's just residual activity in the brain as the electrical energy from your cerebral functions dissipates
PlumBerries · 31-35, F
[c=#7700B2]thts exactly what it is.. I wasn't saying I believe it was heaven.. But for the people who have said to have died and came back alive have said there is a after life.. Maybe it was just that residual activity in the brain that made them think there was that [/c]
MetalGreymon · 36-40, M
@PlumBerries:

I think the idea is that at death your brain is releasing the same kind of chemicals as it does when you dream
There are practically 100,000 different theories on that among the sects of Christianity. (exaggeration for the sake of emphasis of course)
MetalGreymon · 36-40, M
@puck61:

Sure. But the bible seems to use pretty clear language in that area.
The dead are asleep.
"This very day you will be with me in paradise."
but just a few words later it makes clear that Jesus did not go to paradise for three days....so......
Then there are 11 verses in the old testament that clearly state that there is absolutely no life after death!
Just like Cain's banishment and wandering. It's a whole lot of (????)
MetalGreymon · 36-40, M
@puck61:

Well that's not at all surprising considering christianity is just tacked on to judaism. According to the jews there was no afterlife. If you were good with god, you got bitches and cows. If you weren't then he'd kill you and your family and anyone who happened to be standing too close at the time

You don't go to sleep you die and all that remains of you is memories others have of you. The End.
MetalGreymon · 36-40, M
@FreeSpirit1:

Yes, obviously from an atheist perspective this is true. But this question is more directed towards christians
Babydew · 46-50, F
In response to your question read Ecclesiastes 12:7
MetalGreymon · 36-40, M
@Babydew:

"and the dust returns to the ground it came from,
and the spirit returns to God who gave it."

What does that mention about a timeline?
Babydew · 46-50, F
Ecc. Is thought to be about the end of a long life. The grinders being few, a reference to teeth that have fallen out. Those who look out of the window be darkened being the eyes. A the keepers of the house being frail the bones becoming brittle. It's been a while since I've read this so I'm paraphrasing and may be a little off so in essence the entire twelfth chapter is the timeline. Just an explanation I've heard
