Can somebody please explain to me why Jesus Christ would want us to love our enemies so that we may be called children of God? And what good is it? [Spirituality & Religion]

Like I've done it in the past, I loved my enemies, and boy did it ever hurt like hell!!!!! Two years later I'm still licking my wounds! What good is it to love your enemies? What possible good can come from it? All I ever did was open my heart up to abuse!

Because Jesus loves everyone

The example he used was the Samaritan who extended her hospitality to help someone who was considered an "enemy"....not someone you know who would stab you in the back at every opportunity, for those people you need to set boundaries because they are dangerous in a variety of ways. A modern day example is to treat foreigners in your country with respect (as long as they don't give you a reason otherwise)....instead of villifying individuals based on what their government is doing.

I think the idea is that you can't fight hate with more hate.

I m Muslim and I believe in Jesus may God be pleased with him
Living your enemy as per my understanding is , in a hope that they turn good
But that does not mean bear abuse unnecessarily or to a limit which in turn will make you hate people afterwards
What I mean to say
Sometimes you might have heard or experienced that when you do good to someone or try to do good to someone it ends up like a nightmare. For e.g. Real incident once a person helped a poor lady by bringing her home and in due course robbers raided the home who were with that lady.

Bottom line
Have limits
Spread love be ready for tests as well but have some limits as well as I believe one would not like to turn their Love into hate just because of that one or two incidents.
Just my opinion

I think it's about being the "bigger" person and the golden rule. Stooping to their level, seeking revenge, hating...all it does is make you more miserable.

It helps to avoid endless cycles of vengeance.

Loving someone means wanting the best for them, not necessarily loving every thing they do. You love your kids, you want the best for them, but you don't like it when they pee on the floor. Jesus got angry at the money changers, but He still loved them and wanted the best for them. That is why he chastised them for bringing disfavour on His Fathers house. He was trying to guide all souls to Heaven through His crucifixion and eventually salvation. By chasing out the money changers, he was giving them the opportunity to do better, because He wants everyone to get a shot at Heaven.

Also, remember, there are various types of love. Jesus is generally thought of to be referring to "agape love' which is charity and benevolence. Not a romantic love, or even the love of friendship. When we love our enemies, or our neighbors as ourselves, we are hoping for them Salvation, not necessarily to be their friend or lover.

When you demonstrate Faith to God.
You will be recognized as a child of God.
It has worked in my life.

Simply because you are a better person. If you respond in kind, no matter how tempting, then no better than them.

Can it hurt? Well countless early believers were put to death. One may be short and relatively quick. The other may along the lines of slow torture.

While the teaching may be to turn the other cheek, not sure it says you have to stay in harm''s way. If you are in a unhealthy place, if you are not leaving is it because you are staying and witnessing?
Because this is the theory behind it , Jewish , Muslim and Christianity ... when you die you are hoping to go to heaven and in heaven they want good concepts , not bad concepts meaning any hate Of any kind is not welcome so as your here preparing yourself for heaven , if you manage it here then it shouldn't be a doddle in heaven

Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered. Matthew 21:18-22

The majority of people are either Self Centered or else Self obsessed and the reason why they love your enemies is that you won't have them in your head and be poisoned from there sickness .

Thank you all! All very good answers and they really helped me to see why we should love our enemies. But I need to love myself as well and avoid abuse.
