For those who don't believe in the bible, the verses don't help. But if you study the historicity of Jesus as a person, you realise the evidence that he existed and that we have a substantial record of his words is pretty well established.

Jesus claimed to be God. He did this in many ways and on many occasions. There are only three options:
1. He was deluded. (He was wrong and didn't know it.)
2. He was telling a lie. (He was wrong and did know it.)
3. He was telling the truth. (He was right.)

Christ is one of the most respected and influential human beings in history. He inspired other people who inspire us like Gandhi, Martin Luther King and others. His words have inspired millions. He presented ideas that dignify the poor and vulnerable, promoted non-violent response to injustice and wrong. Taught love as profound action even for your enemies.

I find him the most inspiring and together human being I know of. The idea that he was lying or deluded doesn't add up for me. That only leaves one option...

@Abstraction
the evidence that he existed and that we have a substantial record of his words is pretty well established.
Where? I've seen that claim made several times but no one has even been able to answer that simple question. If there really is extra-biblical evidence of Jesus, it should be a simple matter to present it.
Pfuzylogic · M
@Lynda70
Try Josephus
Lila15 · 22-25, F
@Abstraction That's Lewis' Trilemma. However, since Jesus himself never wrote anything down, you (and C.S. Lewis) are missing two other possibilities:

4. The people who wrote down the Jesus story were deluded.
5. The people who wrote down the Jesus story were lying.

You can't conclude that Jesus was telling the truth just because you don't like #1 or #2 when there are other possibilities.
Lila15 · 22-25, F
@Pfuzylogic Josephus wrote his Antiquities around 40 years after the purported events, so they're not contemporary with Jesus' life. Also, in the most often-quoted version, he says "Jesus was the Messiah," clearly not something an observant Jew like Josephus would have written. Other versions don't contain this statement, suggesting that it was added later on by Christian copyists.

The main point of Josephus' quote is that Christians who believed in Jesus were still around at that time, which isn't in dispute as they're still around today. It would be like someone writing that L. Ron Hubbard is considered to be a deity by Scientologists, and that the Church of Scientology still exists. While those statements are true, they aren't proof that the Church of Scientology is itself true in any way.
Pfuzylogic · M
@Lila15
If we must divert from the main topic then I will share my personal experience with the church of Scientology. They asked me to grab two tin cans and then displayed a meter to show my spirit. They lost me from the very beginning. ron hubbard as a science fiction writer spoke of creating religion before he started scientology.
Jesus had 12 disciples which all suffered for the truth of Jesus the prophesied Messiah. Everyone of them was in his presence during his ministry and all except judas saw his ressurection after his crucifixion.
Make no mistake he is alive now! The reference I made was to the Book of Jewish Antiquities. He was born a few years after the crucifixion.
When people try to disprove his existence they point only at archeological evidence.
When you read the Holy Bible itself it is a beautiful experience confirmed by the Promise contained therein. The Holy Bible doesn’t change like Science continually must.
Lila15 · 22-25, F
@Pfuzylogic I'm not arguing for the validity of the Church of Scientology, I'm comparing the statement "there are Scientologists today" with Josephus' statement regarding Christians. And while Josephus was born shortly after the crucifixion, he wasn't a Christian, and he wrote Antiquities over 40 years later.

You also have to be careful about using the Bible to prove itself. What you have is a story about the apostles. You can't say "the apostles believed and were witnesses, therefore the story must be true." The same argument could be used to prove the Quran or Dianetics. If God has operated in your own life, then that will certainly be true for you, but it's no truer for someone else than if I dropped a heavy weight on my foot and expected you to feel the pain as strongly as I did.

Also, the Bible doesn't change, but peoples' interpretation of it does. You are not following the same Christianity today that people living in ancient times were.
Pfuzylogic · M
@Lila15
You have absolutely no idea on how the church operates unless you are saved by the Holy Spirit!
Otherwise you are on the outside looking in pretending that you know what is going on with another person. I am sorry you don’t have a personal relationship with Jesus.
It would completely change your life and knowledge of God.
Lila15 · 22-25, F
@Pfuzylogic My relationship with Jesus is my own business. I'm not here to evangelize.

The idea of a "personal relationship with Jesus" dates back to 17th century German Pietists, so it's relatively recent. Prior to that, the idea that anyone could be a Christian without being a member of a community of faith would have been inconceivable. Anyway, I'm not judging your religious beliefs, so please don't judge mine. I'm just sharing a different perspective.
Pfuzylogic · M
@Lila15
I am saying that you have one method of scrutiny in judging Christin believers and you juxtaposed a bizarre community of Scientology to describe my belief. Belief is a very important part of knowing the existence of Jesus, even critical. It is by Faith we are known and not any type of proof that you might require.
Lila15 · 22-25, F
@Pfuzylogic Scientologists also have faith, and believe as sincerely in their religion as you do in yours.
Pfuzylogic · M
@Lila15
If you can’t determine the difference and you can’t exclaim your Faith in the ressurection of Jesus from the grave then you don’t have Christian Faith. Again it is an invisible church but there are expectations stated by Jesus that you not deny him if you believe.
Lila15 · 22-25, F
@Pfuzylogic I'm not a Scientologist.

You're entitled to your opinion.
Pfuzylogic · M
@Lila15 You currently aren’t acknowledging your Salvation.
Enough said.
4. The people who wrote down the Jesus story were deluded.
5. The people who wrote down the Jesus story were lying.
Yes, I was aware of both of those as logical possibilities which is why I excluded them in my original post. I have explored both of these at academic level - and so it isn't simply about extra-biblical sources, nor is it about accepting the bible as the word of God or something. As stated, we have pretty good evidence that Jesus existed...

Since it's a very detailed exploration I frankly couldn't be stuffed trying to lay all that out here where a) most people don't really grasp academic arguments of historicity; b) people have their minds made up anyway.
I don't bother on SW. I was on EP for a decade and used to walk through any topic like that - I found most people are 2-3 arguments deep and then resort to abuse. I had some great discussions but mostly it was people resorting to anger and abuse. :D

I accept also that my response won't be satisfactory and you'll draw your own conclusions. That's fine.
Lila15 · 22-25, F
@Abstraction I don't think you can ignore those possibilities since it's an incontrovertible fact that Jesus himself did not write anything.

I'm not arguing against Jesus' existence, only that everything attributed to him is not necessarily true. In the end, the only truth will be your own personal, subjective experience.
MasterLee · 56-60, M
@Lila15 it has been long established someone inserted a comment and proclaimed josephus said it. This has long been disctedited. It stands as the only 'extra biblical' reference.

Further the scientific and historical errors taint the text. Therefore, however you slice it, the bible cannot be taken seriously.

However, many people feel they 'need' it to be true, so it keeps getting rewritten and reprinted to suit the current audience.

I am not telling anyone what to believe, just that evangelizing and making these claims are a fool's errand.
Abstraction · 61-69, M
@Lila15 If you read again, you'll see that from my first post, I didn't ignore the possibilities. I understand those possibilities very well and the arguments and counter-arguments. The evidence, viewed objectively, is that Jesus existed and we have a substantive record of things he said.

I have no inclination to put long hermeneutical and historicity evidences on a site like this which is made for quick comments. Here you can make a simple point, which I made. You perhaps reject it for the reasons you stated. That's fine.
Carazaa · F
@Lila15 No you are wrong! The Bible teaches that Jesus proved he is God. People who knew him followed him, not because he is a myth, not because he was a liar, and not because he was insane, but because he did the miracles and proved he is God in the flesh raising people from the dead. We know that they who knew him followed him and wrote their own accounts down, that is a fact. We know that leaders in Rome wanted to kill him because he was followed by many and he was a threat to the leaders. We know that the old testament authors wrote about Jesus before he was born. And God told them the year he would be born, and Jesus told the Jews that they would be scattered all over the world, and in the last days they would be gathered back to Jerusalem. It all happened exactly that way.

Those writers were delusioned? They were mentally ill? They lied? Not possible! How do we know? If everything they wrote came true they knew something, God told them.

And people follow him today and it changes our lives. A myth does not help me in a crisis and change the outcome of a disease, an accident, a fire, heal my heart, or my family, but prayer does! Many people in the world who believe in myths are willing to kill for their cause, but only christians are willing to love their enemies, turn the other cheek, and even willing to be killed by them. God calls us a "peculiar people", and that we are! We are not of this world but traveling through to a better country, whos builder and maker is God.
@Carazaa
The Bible teaches that Jesus proved he is God.
That's no diffeent from claiming that books about Sants Claus proves he is real. After all, as @GodSpeed63 would argue, no one has proven Santa doesn't live.
If everything they wrote came true they knew something, God told them.
Not everything they wrote did come true so you've proven nothing.
@Abstraction
we have pretty good evidence that Jesus existed...
Did you miss @Lynda70's question above? She asked where that evidence is. I'd like to know too.
Since it's a very detailed exploration I frankly couldn't be stuffed trying to lay all that out
Don't try to weasel out of it. Just admit the truth - there isn't any real extra-biblical evidence that Jesus even existed, much less that he was "the son of God".
Carazaa · F
@NortiusMaximus Have you not been paying attention? Did you not read my comment to Lila? Are you not a logical person who understand why people who study the Bible their entire lives are willing to die for Jesus? You don't think we all were in denial and not believers before we slowly understood that every word is from God. Have you studied the Bible every day for 5 hrs for 50 years? Most religious people in the world are christians, over half believe in God. most of those were atheists before God changed them. Are you not thinking?
Lynda70 · F
@Carazaa
Most people in the world are christians
There are ca. 7 billion people in the world of whom ca. 2.2 billion admit to being Christians. That's most definitly not most. Can't you count?

Once again, where's the real, extra-biblical evidence that Jesus even existed?

Incidentally, I have studied the bible, that's how I know it doesn't stand up to scrutiny and that's why I'm an Atheist.
Carazaa · F
@Lynda70 Most religious people are christians, and more than half 60-80% believe in God because it is self evident that God created the world.

That's simply wrong. You even claim Catholics are not christians so you've reduced the count to fewer than 1 bilion people. That's not many out of a population of 7 billion.
more than half 60-80% believe in God
What are yiou tring to say? All christians are supposed to believe in God.
it is self evident that God created the world.
What left field did that come out of? Saying something is self evident doesn't make it so. I can just as easily say it's self-evident that your god is just a myth. That claim is at least as valid as yours.

What hurt you so bad that you fight the church?
Jesus still lives.
He also heals.
Turn your heart and repent.
