Yoga is Demonic? [Spirituality & Religion]

A view held by many conservative Christians is that yoga is "demonic". Without discrediting the argument with the "all religion is fake" counterclaim, can you give your position on the topic and why?

A proper Yoga session ends with giving thanks to Hindu deities...I think that is most likely the source of the objections..

@Mandalorian Perfect, thank you for helping me understand :)

There's nothing wrong with meditation, however, it's important to consider a variety of aspects about this practice. When we begin to meditate, right away, our mind becomes wide open to receive any and all types of spiritual forces, no matter whether we attempt to empty our mind of thoughts, or simply repeat a mantra. That's why it's important how you meditate.

Idling is dangerous. When we have nothing to do, our mind can turn to negative or evil thoughts. It goes from thoughts to words, then sometimes actions which may prove to be consequential. That is why it is said that an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. Depression feeds on negative thoughts, beliefs or behaviors. All in all, quite a lousy cycle. Keeping yourself occupied is difficult for many, and many fall prey to the cycle. It is seen frequently.

Proverbs 16:27 Idle hands are the devil’s workshop; idle lips are his mouthpiece, literally, “A worthless man devises mischief; and in his lips there is a scorching fire.”

Something to consider is a study published in 2017 on the negative effects of meditation, led by Dr. Willoughby Britton, Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour at Brown University: 82% reported fear, anxiety panic, and paranoia. 57% reported depression, dysphoria, or grief. 50% reported social impairment. 47% reported delusional, irrational, or paranormal beliefs. 47% reported physical pain. 42% reported occupational impairment. 30% reported rage, anger, or aggression. 27% reported sleep disorder. 25% reported self-conscious emotions and insecurity. And 17% said that they experienced something so severe that it required inpatient hospitalization. Most people reported these symptoms lasting months to years, and these regular long-term effects seem to be more congruent with psychological breakdowns and disorders, than with enlightenment.

Transcendental meditation is harmful, as it deceives the meditators into believing they are God, and those who believe they are God, are God’s enemies for they are full of pride.

Second, transcendental meditation's purpose is to induce the meditator to contact demons (that is, to see demons, to talk with them, to invite them in his life), which are evil spirits which live in the air and are ready to hurt people by oppressing or possessing them. The meditator is encouraged to invoke demons by repeating mantras. A mantra is a sound symbol of one or more syllables used to induce a mystical state. Thus the mantra both invites a particular being (demon) to enter the one using it, and also creates the passive state in the meditator to facilitate this fusion of beings. Therefore mantras are not meaningless sounds that bring about deep rest, as TM teachers say to the meditators, but words addressed to demons which are invited to enter the meditator. This is nothing to get mixed in with.

What should we think about when we meditate?

God does want us to meditate, but not the way most think. David gives insight as to when to meditate: “But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in His law does he meditate day and night ” ( Psa. 1:1-2 ). He also stated, “O how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day."

This verse in God's Word is included for a reason. He knows the power and influence from the dark side of the spiritual realm. A safer way to meditate:

Philippians 4:8 - " Therefore, my brethren, whatsoever things that are true, those that are honorable, those that are righteous, those things that are pure, those things that are precious, those things that are praiseworthy, deeds of glory and of praise, meditate/think on these things."

I know some cancer patients are directed to meditation to help manage pain, along with prayer. The mind is a powerful tool in pain management. I don't feel God would be opposed to that.
@InvictusIndigo I couldn't say "it's not Christian". After all, David and others meditated in the bible. God's Word, as I mentioned in my statement, tells us how to do it.

God does want us to meditate, but not the way most think. David gives insight as to when to meditate: “But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in His law does he meditate day and night ” ( Psa. 1:1-2 ). He also stated, “O how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day."

So you are saying that some meditation can cause leaving your mind open to bad things. You contradict yourself.@LadyGrace
@JimboSaturn I've never contradicted myself. Read my whole first response to the poster. Or else you're misinterpreting my responses. I said it depends on HOW you meditate. It's in the bible.

Yoga is actually a spiritual practice in Hinduism (probably other religions too, or maybe it's a religion on its own) and many conservative Christians believe that all other religions are demonic except for theirs.

@InvictusIndigo hahaha thank you!
There seems to be much confusion in this forum about this subject. That is not meaning you, personally. Satan is the author of confusion. The Bible mentions the words "meditate" and "meditation" 20 times (18 in the Old Testament and 2 in the New Testament). However, it is important to differentiate between what the Bible means when it speaks of meditation, versus what is generally called meditation today.

The meditation that most people speak about and practice today has its roots in Hinduism. This form of meditation (often practiced in various forms of yoga) is self-centered (meaning, looking inward). Its ultimate goal is to better oneself and become united with the "ultimate or higher reality." The practitioner is told to assume various postures, repeat a certain mantra, control his breathing, empty his mind, etc... in order to reach this goal and attain salvation.

Now, on the other hand, what the Bible calls meditation is the complete opposite. Biblical meditation is God-centered (looking outward and upward to God) (Ps 63:6)(Ps 77:12)(Ps 143:5) and primarily focused on His Word (Ps 119:15,23,48,78,148). In the Old Testament, where "meditation" is mentioned the majority of the time in the Bible (especially in the Psalms), two different Hebrew words are used: "hagah" meaning "to murmur, moan, growl utter, speak" and "siyach meaning "to ponder."

I believe if any Christian is confused, the absolute way to reverse that, is to seek answers in the truth of His Word...on any subject. We must be careful of our sources.

@SW-User You're friggin golden, my dude 😂
Some yoga teachers include elements of Indian religion. Mantra, prayer.

Most yoga teachers I have encountered do not. It is entirely a body-mind practice.

It is not uncommon to find specifically Christian yoga teachers.

One can make anything demonic. One can get closer to God with anything. Has more to do with one's attitude than the thing.

I just want to say.
The God that touched me, was just pure Love! Telling me I would always be protected!
The love that touched me is all powerful and nothing remotely negative can stand against it.
I do not believe in Satan or Evil. Belief in such a thing only creates it for the individual.
I meditate every day. I have done for 40 years. I have never once experienced any negative interventions.
@TheVegon I'm glad you love God.

according to certain christians, 80s cartoons and toys were demonic:

Including: She-Ra, He-Man, Thundercats... and this was all before the SJWs went back in time to destroy peoples childhoods and such. 😅

D&D was demonic accoding to some:

And Magic the gathering had to be censored... I mean "excorcised".

And according to some christians Condoms are evil... even when half of the country is HIV-positive.

... So I wouldn't worry to much, neither would I try to understand it. 😅
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@InvictusIndigo That's why I said "some" and "certain"

Look... without wanting to come off as being antagonistic. If you have a bunch of people that believe in things that can't be proven. And these things are being tought by people that have power because their followers trust them. Then why is it so difficult to believe that when these people get even more cwazy in their ideas, that people that are already open to believe a bunch of mumbojombo just follow them some more? They already have given up critical thinking when it comes to what they perceive as "spiritual" matters, why not take the next step? That doesn't mean everyone is going to do it, but in every group there are people that just go a bit further. Look up Jim Jones' his church experiment... he took it too the limit too.
InvictusIndigo · 22-25, M
@Kwek00 Just in case, I wanted to make sure that you knew I wasn't trying to disprove or counter your argument and above post - in fact, I agree with you :)
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@InvictusIndigo Nan, I didn't feel attacked or annything. I'm just trying to answer your question. And I said that I didn't want to be antagonistic because you indentify as someone that believes in a part of all this. And I'm just really straight forward when it comes to this stuff.

If you have a part of the poppulation, that believes that critical thinking is a bad thing... you are bound to get delusional stuff running wild. This isn't only a religious thing, it happens in political believe systems too.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
Because in their eyes, anything non-Christian is demonic.

Lol yoga is an Indian religious practice with roots in Hinduism. It is not Christian. It is as simple as that.
DragonSlayerr · 26-30, F
It is? Well shoot. Guess I’ve been worshipping demons without even knowing it
Just show them how "usury" (charging of profit or interest) is forbidden by God in both the Old and New Testaments and the hypocrites will shut up. They are just as guilty as a Christian who practices Yoga.
@InvictusIndigo Usury was first officially forbidden with the establishment of the Taberrnacle (in the book of Leviticus, I think) and was still forbidden to the first church according to Acts Chapter Two. The first church was permitted to pay profit and interest but were not allowed to charge it.
It also says that no-one owned anything individually, but shared equally in everything communally.
InvictusIndigo · 22-25, M
@Anonymartyr Perfect, thank you for helping me learn a bit more about this :)
@InvictusIndigo I have certificates from many denominations, but none of them teach bible without adding or removing something to or from it. (the book of Revelations bears a curse for such)
Tibby · 22-25, F
The word yoga means to join or unite, and yogis view this unison in different ways. The unison of body, mind and spirit, uniting all the aspects of yourself, or uniting with a higher power or spiritual force.

You can believe in a God or gods, or nothing at all.
InvictusIndigo · 22-25, M
@Tibby I love this, I appreciate the incorporation of the literal translation of the term in your argument. :)
Tibby · 22-25, F
@InvictusIndigo 🙂🕉
calicuz · 51-55, M
That is just silly thinking
Yoga is Hindu and fanatical Christians call any "false" religion in their eyes Satanic. Because they have this belief that false religions are the work of the devil
It is literally a type of stretching and exercise. These are the same people I have heard say psychiatry is witchcraft.
Not sure but Linda Blair should get some kinda Yoga award she can spin her head all the way around backwards now that is mad skills
