Why did you stop believing in God? [Spirituality & Religion]

SW-User
He is misgyonist, racist, abusive and deluded.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@Emosaur I didn't write the theory and I quit supporting it 40 years ago but I did read an article not long ago by an evolutionist that said that whales evolved from something similar to a dog. Let me guess you don't read a thing written by evolutionists either. Too Funny.

@hippyjoe1955
Two scientists that are leading research and development in their fields
You must be joking!
redredred · M
When I found I couldn't define the difference between religion and superstition or god and santa claus, I gave up. Its all silly twaddle in any case.
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@hippyjoe1955 so you have neither evidence nor logic (perhaps you meant to say reason), yet still maintain your religious pretence?

Not funny - merely pathetic
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@redredred Yeah he's lied to me too. The first time I ever spoke to him around Christmastime in 2016, he claimed he owned a business in British Columbia, Canada and that he received corporate welfare from the Canadian government. He now denies having ever said that.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@newjaninev2 Do you know a sitcom called "The Goldbergs?"
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
I think I never believed in the first place, as a child I was just made to, due to a society which is very focused on religion, and when I reached the age of existential questions around 13, that's when I realized I didn't really believe.

When I was born to a monster who believed in murder in his name
Moosepantspatty · 31-35, M
@LadyGrace no ma'am, I've never defended her and never will. Simply stated, her and her ilk were bad, in the name of God. The werent ill, they werent off, they werent crazy. They were devout and sound of mind.

That said, they werent representative of all people of faith, but we do not get to say that they were a cult, or ill, or false Christian's because they do reprehensible things. We must discover why their faith leads them to do monstrous things instead of brushing their behavior away as unchristian.
@Moosepantspatty So you're saying a healthy mind wants to kill their child. Not so. I don't care who it is.
@Moosepantspatty I understand that but I was not saying she was part of a cult or false Christian or anything else bad about her. I will just leave this.

@SW-User Faith is not tricky. The devil is. He is the great deceiver.
SW-User
I stopped believing in the people that made me believe in god.
@SW-User You're just always thinking of me because you want me to move to the front of the queue. 😉
SW-User
@Mahdkvp His son? That is cruel for God to do the very thing Satanist and those ignorant civilizations of the past used to do. Those sorcerer's and witches of the dark ages used to do up to this modern era yet we remain ignorant to the facts

@quitwhendone 😶 haha That place is firmly taken right now
I stopped believing in the church. And I believe in big G more then ever..

Church doesn’t get you to heaven....so I totally get what you’re saying! @TheOneyouwerewarnedabout
I never have and I never will.
Same reason I stopped believing in Santa Claus. 🎅
goliathtree · 56-60, M
I walked away from the church but not from God. I found that I had better piece of mind and clarity of thought in God's creation 7 days a week rather than in a room full of hypocrites for a couple of hours a week.
goliathtree · 56-60, M
@Speedyman And, I agree, if you are sincere in knowing your failings, and are seeking the church for support in attempting to correct them, then more power to you. I found that it was a distraction that amplified my failings and that I was better off not going.
Speedyman · 70-79, M
You might of tried to correct your failings rather than blame the church. Alternatively you could have found a church that helped you. @goliathtree
goliathtree · 56-60, M
@Speedyman I am not blaming the church for my failings. It is easier for me to deal with them without the distraction. I found a church that has helped me with that. It is called the glory of God's creation.
DaveyTaco · 31-35, M
Idk if it was so much unbelief. I more walked away by my own actions. And everyone already hated me when they sensed the spirit in my soul.. even the church I went to. I finally cried so hard I puked. Fell into a deep depression. I've been hiding this from people. Because of what happened when doctors put me on medicine.. I became a walking zombie who hallucinated before going to bed almost every night. Good hallucinations for the most part but bad in God's eyes... So that is why :/
DaveyTaco · 31-35, M
@Silverwings there was a church in Omaha that probably was the only church I ever really liked..
Silverwings · 61-69, F
@DaveyTaco and you have attended several?
DaveyTaco · 31-35, M
@Silverwings I've been hurt by several churches. Scared to death. But that one church was the only one that accepted me for me
riseofthemachine · 41-45, M
I never stopped believing in God but my views changed with different religions that I believe in that keeps me at comfort .
I remember about 6-8 years ago I was going through some shitty times , in an out of suicide thoughts and attempts and I questioned and blamed God , very angry I was but something one night drastically changed my life about my beliefs cause I saw it full in the face , by God then I didnt question nothing no more and ever since then I've a fierce warmth inside my soul and that night it changed my life forever .
I only realized that I'm only a spot on this earth and that I leave God do his job , and I heard a spiritual person saying ' faith is insecurity - your ready to follow " .
I have friends and there very religious and they only believe in one thing around there beliefs and that's there thing but I had to try other religions too or beliefs around spirituality or else I'd end up in a black hole if I didnt .
Another person then described " Pride " maintaining shit in there heads 😆😆😆. I wish you well on your journey
I never really believed but my brother was born again and encouraged me to read that bible...that's what put the nail in the coffin of any belief i might have had.

It was just profoundly human in scope and content. I just can't see what the faithful see in it.
@Silverwings

I don't doubt for a moment that you must believe that because of your faith.
It doesn't change my experience.

I'm sorry i wasn't the atheist who read the bible looking to criticize it.
I read it with an earnest desire to see god in it if he was there and my experience was that it was an utterly mundane, human text.
Silverwings · 61-69, F
@Pikachu I do not understand that at all? Is there a way to tag someone else to this post?
@Silverwings

Understand what?
SW-User
Life.

Most recently, I asked that my nan would not suffer and for weeks she did. When she went to the hospital, I asked that she did not die. I asked that she did not suffer.

She suffered until she died.

If there is a god, he can suck my cock and get the fuck out of my face.
Silverwings · 61-69, F
@SW-User Mercy me, so you curse God, because he did not answer your prayer the way you thought he should?
SW-User
@Silverwings I curse god because he doesnt do shit. May he strike me down now if what I say if false.

See. Fuck that guy.
Silverwings · 61-69, F
If you have ever had any experience with God you will never stop believing in him.
TheWildEcho · 56-60, M
@Silverwings that's so true!
Teachocolate · 51-55, F
I believe in God.God has healed me in many areas. One e.g I got healed one night after a prayer.Dont hate me for saying this, just telling the truth.
TheWildEcho · 56-60, M
@Teachocolate yes I've had similar experiences, and I'll never hate you, although some atheists might give you grief just ignore them!
Teachocolate · 51-55, F
@TheWildEcho No worries,I can bear it.I am resilient.😅Oops!Where's my umbrella?I need my shield haha🤣

My family are all atheists, I never felt I needed to check it out.
SW-User
@Silverwings Maybe, if so, it's taking its sweet time on showing up. lol.
Silverwings · 61-69, F
@SW-User Faith comes by hearing and hearing comes by the word of God, so which comes first the hearing or faith?
SW-User
@Silverwings I think faith would come first, you got to have some of it in you to seek it out and take it in. Most of the time, that catalyst comes from people's family, you have faith in them to look after you and teach you the world whilst you are vulnerable. Then I guess religion could be a gateway to those simpler times in a complicated and confusing world.
SW-User
My mother became a born again catholic when i was seven and tried to get me converted but i never got into it.
Silverwings · 61-69, F
@SW-User Maybe because Catholic is a religion? Relationship is different.
SwampFlower · 31-35, F
I searched for faith for a long time but could never find it.
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@SwampFlower Faith is pretending to know something that you do not, in fact, know.

Your refusal to accept pretence speaks well of you 😀
Silverwings · 61-69, F
Lord I pray that the minds of those who refuse to believe in you can be changed before they leave this world, forgive them Lord, they know not what they do, amen.
Harriet03 · 41-45, F
@Silverwings What makes you say that?
Silverwings · 61-69, F
@Harriet03 because your lack of faith keeps you from experiencing peace with God.
Harriet03 · 41-45, F
@Silverwings Call me old fashioned but i like a smidge of evidence hun.
Speedyman · 70-79, M
I didn’t. I allowed logic to rule my life and thinking
Beatbox34 · 31-35, M
I believe he exists. I just felt that he watched me suffer in pain so I chose to believe that he hates me.
Beatbox34 · 31-35, M
@Silverwings By Burning, you could say that. I mean yes my father did and god isn't to blame for that. But my dad did so much damage to us emotionally and financially. I myself have struggled to make it right for the past 9 years and i haven't been able to do so. It just seems bleak at the end. I try begging him and yet it feels silent.

I remember crying everyday in church asking for his help to get it through. I saw no difference yet everyone who screwed us over got better. I'm not saying he did it but I wish he helped us. My mother still cries to him in prayer but I don't know what to say.
Silverwings · 61-69, F
@Beatbox34 Ok I am beginging to understand a little better, we often times see God the same way we see our human fathers, but that is so wrong, he is the ultimate good father. You do understand that God hates evil, and it is not his will for others to be mistreated. You beg your human father? or your heavenly father?
Beatbox34 · 31-35, M
@Silverwings I have never begged my human father. He's not worth our time and he's no more. I have never begged god asking for money or all the pleasures in life. Instead I have asked him to give us peace, a solution for the problems and a way to carry on with the pain.

I have never said he did us harm but I just feel he is silent. A lot of people have done us harm and get away. I never asked for revenge and I never wanted that but I do deserve what I worked for.

Let's take this instance. I was employed a year ago by my employer. I went through a terrible breakup in which my ex chose to contact me and push me into further depression. But I was dealing with so much last year and I worked to get the job. I was pushed to the sidelines because of my defected color vision. The employer was at fault and I still didn't get recruited when it's almost a year now. I went for something different. We prayed everyday to him and I was harassed for over a year by the employer and the hospital. This is what makes me feel sick that I can't catch a break and that just demotivates me more depriving my mental health altogether. Again I still prayed every night but I don't see a solution to anything.
Peapod · 61-69, F
I have not stop believing in God, but I have pulled away from organized religion. I cannot fathom why so many innocent children are born into horrific conditions while others are so blessed, regardless of belief.

I simply have more questions than religion could ever answer.
Silverwings · 61-69, F
@Peapod I think that no religion can answer that very profound question, but only God. However I will have to add that even though that needs an explanation, not getting one would never keep me from believing in and trusting God.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
When I realized that everything good in my life came from my own hard work and effort. No god ever gave me anything. Meaning either he isn't real, or he's never done a thing for me. So why should I have faith in something less than myself?
ABCDEF7 · M
Depends on state of mind. When in pure absolute consciousness, you know you yourself are no different than God, but that doesn't denies God, it's just you experience God in yourself.
Silverwings · 61-69, F
@ABCDEF7 you know you yourself are no different than God > sounds just like Satan wanting to be just like God, newsflash, there is and always will be only One God, and we are not him.
ABCDEF7 · M
@Silverwings You are talking what most religions tell but can you show me the God? The answer definitely is no, because your philosophy is not realistic.

There are many other philosophies apart from your knowledge of God and Satan. According the philosophy I am talking about, you are also God, it's just you don't realise that. The philosophy is called Advaita (non dual), means we and God are not two. But before you can understand that you have to know "Who you are?"
I didn't really
SW-User
I stopped believing in a specific religion because I began to reject the idea that there could be one true religion to the exclusion of all others. I still believe in a higher power, just not any one religion's conception of it.

Allelse · 36-40, M
I never did, I remember as a kid wanting to be Peter Pan at some point, oh and I believed in Santa Clause because I got presents each year. But then I grew up.
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
Never started. Why would I (or anyone) do such a thing?
redredred · M
@hippyjoe1955 Youre the master of the "Simple" part
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@hippyjoe1955 Let’s give you a reality check. You claimed I deny having said various things. I asked you for examples... and you failed to provide a single example.

Now you seem to have accepted your own lie as reality.

Of course, this is normal among creationists, but nevertheless makes you look somewhat irrational and confused.

Your constant attempts to deceive others are sad enough, but your success in deceiving yourself is nothing short of startling.
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@hippyjoe1955 I understand that your sole objective is to run away from having to actually respond in a germane and honest manner, but it would be nice if at some stage you could find enough manhood to actually front up to your timidity and self-deception.

Everyone here would find it refreshing

I took a course in the philosophy of religion and realized none of the arguments really hold up.

And at a certain point it felt like I was continuously lying to myself about it. I finally just let go of it during a very turbulent time in my life.
