What's the point of praying? [Spirituality & Religion]

For those of you who are religious...Religious views depict God as all-knowing, so what difference does it make if you pray? Wouldn't he already know what's going on?

This post isn't meant to bash religious people (my whole family is religious) , so I'm not looking for negative replies. Just wondering about the mindset behind this. This is something they didn't ever really seem to explain lol

I see it as making an effort. God has moved mountains for us. Whether He knows what we desire in our hearts or not, the very least we can do is talk to Him.

I can't really add much that others haven't thoroughly stated. But we communicate with our partners, friends, parents etc, so why would you not talk to the one who created you and sacrificed more than any of them have done? Just posing a different spin on how to view it.

Huh.. let me "try" to explain how I feel. Yes, I believe in the power of prayer.

It's like having a loving one who is in need... as a parent, friend, lover... we are all knowing what would be good, helpful for this loved one. BUT.. they are grown, have choices or maybe rejects any help. sigh... They have to ask at times for help, a solution.

Prayer is asking for help. Prayer is like meditation, like the Law of Attraction.... We are focusing our minds, our will on a particular thing/person. The mind and spirit is powerful. Prayer opens that … line, door to help.

I've reread my words... good luck in understanding, I did not do so well in explaining. It's hard subject to do so. I guess folks have to believe .. to know.
I like your determination to find answers. The point of prayer is connection with God, not to ask for anything and everything.

For example, as a 5 yr. old, I guess all one can think to do, is to ask God for things, but adults are supposed to understand that prayer is communication with someone who loves us, not to be mistaken for, or used as a sky genie taking a wish list. God loves fellowship with us. Your mother loves you, right? While she knows you extremely well, and loves you, she prefers you still come to her if you need something. She takes great delight in providing your needs, not selfish wants. Same with our Father in heaven. He wants you to come to him and express your desires, however prayer is so much more than that. It shows God exactly where our interest and love is, for one thing. It is to thank God for what you have already received, all the ways He blesses us, and to ask God what you can do for HIM. It isn't about you. It is about God.
Prayer is the expression of free will ... the one aspect of every human that God intended to remain free

Yes God knows everything past, present and future...The Father desires that we have a relationship with him. Prayer can change things... even the mind of God. Moses and Hezikiah both changed the mind of God and their prayers were answered...

@Emosaur My dear... the Bible is the most reliable source out there. And more current than tomorrow’s newspaper or next year’s either for that matter...

It's a source of comfort for me, and those who know I pray for them.

Our relationship with God is based on our Faith and the gift of the Holy Spirit that indwells anyone that is saved by Jesus.
Our prayer is a very important part of our relationship just as any communication would be for any relationship. When we pray to God we acknowledge the source that we look to and don’t pass it off to chance but the very real presence of our God.

@AmmieBell
I normally start off prayer with thankfulness. You can ask for things but it isn’t like God is Santa Claus. God is Holy above all things. Jesus taught “The Lord’s Prayer” in
Matthew 6: 9-13

9 After this manner therefore pray ye:

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
AmmieBell · 18-21, F
@Pfuzylogic Oh yeah, I've heard that before. Except for some reason we said "and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us". But it was really similar. The rest was the same
Pfuzylogic · M
@AmmieBell
I was taught the same way you are. Anyone that sins against you is a transgressor or debtor.
The idea is that Jesus laid down his life to redeem us from an unpayable debt and so once having that debt taken away we shouldn’t impose others to pay us back.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
There is not point in praying if you don't have any faith.
MattMony · 22-25, M
IDK honestly. I remember wondering the same thing growing up, and looking around and realizing I was only really told to talk to God if I wanted something lol. Seemed weird that there was an all mighty being and people just seemed to use him as a wishing well. I still believe in God, but don't pray for things because it feels weird 😂
Abbenthewarwolf · 18-21, M
No one says u have to pray. Or worship anyone or thing. The point of praying is asking for favor. That's the bottom line. And yes prayers r answered but not all of them. this lifetime isn't the only one. U pray in honour. Do his will and not the self. Wake up. This Life is only a moment in time. ✌️

@wilderflower my post isn't for debate. It was to get the opinions of those who Do believe in prayers. You don't have to agree. Frankly, I don't particularly believe in praying either. But I'm not coming on here and being rude about it. Take it to your own post if you feel the need.
MrSimons · 41-45, M
You're missing the point. Prayer for our benefit, not God's. It is in order to develop a relationship with Him and develop your spiritual life. It is also to put yourself in your rightful place in that relationship.
MrSimons · 41-45, M
Praying isn't really for God's benefit. It is as others have said, to develop a relationship with God and to put you in your rightful place in that relationship.

Well said.

I am atheist. As much as I see that praying is useless in some situations, it can have a calming effect
AmmieBell · 18-21, F
@JBird That's definitely what I thought growing up. I'd see people praying for selfish reasons and that's probably where I started not understanding the point of praying lol
JBird · F
@canusernamebemyusername prayers don't work on some people including me. When I pray, I think of bad memories and start to cry, making the whole day worse. That's why I don't pray.
@JBird Yeah. I notice a similar effect for me. Like things seem worse when ever I have prayed. So if I really care about something I wont pray. I know that is probably some type of hypervigilant bias on my part but I have learned to work through it the best way I know how. Which is not to pray. lol
GodSpeed63 · 61-69, M
You allow God to intervene in your life and pull you through some rough times as well as good times.
@GodSpeed63 Do you read and follow every word of the bible?
AmmieBell · 18-21, F
@GodSpeed63 I'm just deleting their comments. I was very clear that this post want to bash religion and I'm getting rid of comments that do lol. That's not the point of my post. Thanks for answering, I really do appreciate it

Praying puts you in a relationship with Yahweh with entering into religious practice. It's not about religion, it never has been or ever will be about religion. It's about a personal relationship with our Heavenly Father.
xixgun · M
You see what is happening here? On this site?
Everyone needs someone to talk to sometimes.
And for a lot longer than there has been an internet, there wasn't.
So we pray.

@Emosaur A precursor and the original form of communication
I have never heard this explained well either.
I’m agnostic, but I know it makes people feel better.

If you lose a loved one and decide to hold those you have left, what’s the point? You all already know what happened.
Knowing is different from hearing. I know what the Brandenburg Concerto sounds like but I still want to hear it. My wife knows I love her but she still wants to hear it
