I started studying Islam and it's history the day after the 9-11 attacks. It is fascinating. Mohammed was basically a 'general' who started out as a gang leader. He and his boys started out raiding caravans and ended up sacking villages and city states. He led more than 100 military expeditions. In Mecca he spoke of peace, tolerance, and godliness. In Medina, he spoke of war and conquest and the rules of engagement. Yes. In the Quran you can find instructions on 'when' and 'how' to beat your wife. Surah 8:12 tells the believers to take off the heads and fingers of non believers. There are 164 "Jihad verses" in the Quran, and they all speak of physical warfare rather than spiritual struggle. At the same time you can find verses that tell the servant of Allah not to force their religion on anyone, and that harming one person is the same as harming all mankind. In that respect it is much like any other middle eastern religious text. There are a hundred thousand pages that 'could' be written about all this, but the main thing I take away is that you cannot judge Islam by Muslims. You can only judge Muslims by Islam. Islamic modernism rocks! Within the body of Islam there is a disease, it is the same disease that affects Christianity and Judaism and every other organized religion on earth. It is called "humanity". Currently Islam facilitates more human rights violations and atrocities than any other religion. A relative short time ago, Christians and papists committed acts that are almost inconceivable in their brutality and cruelty. It is just where we are on the great mandala at 'this' particular time. Saints and fools come in every color and from every temple, synagogue, mosque, circle, coven, clan, and church known to man. Become truth and learn to hate with love! Kill with one hand and give with the other. If you feel peace when you close your eyes in death, you have done well.
