The way he created Adam seems to give a huge clue on why.
He made Adam out of the clay of the Earth and breathed life into him and made him a living soul.

Clearly, a major purpose was for us to have a relationship with Him... to glorify Him... to show forth His love throughout His Creation. That is the whole story of the Bible... from Genesis through Revelation.

I believe it's because he's a thinking being that wants someone else to think and talk with. Just look at us, we're created in his image after all. We need socializing and love.
